View Full Version : How Sony failed to get me back as a customer today. ;(

Well I don't know how many of you (if any) have also recieved this offer; you see, I recieved an email from Sony some days ago that my account - which I had closed about three or four months ago - has been reenabled for 14 days. Free of charge! So they are giving me a chance to reconcider my earlier decision as it would seem.

As I had a free day today, I decided to install all the EQ CDs again and restore my old UI & character settings. Ah and there's always the patch after a fresh install which takes about 50 minutes with my connection. All this took me about three hours. So I sat there and decided to try my cleric Medimai first, since she is the lowest of my chars and deaths wouldn't matter all that much.

So I log on with her and find myself in DSP . I start running around on a search for a group and actually find a nice one as I pass ME. So I'm sitting there and enjoying myself enormously while healing and buffing all those brave slashers and keen fizzlers. After 6 dead Tribals there comes our first train: three tribals, one blood wolf and one lightcrawler. We fought bravely, the steel-packed meeleeists refused to abandon camp in a humiliating display of cowardness and so we all stayed and struggled. But eventually we were overpowered and thus had no other choice but to run for the zone. My Medimai was at 20pct health as the zone which promised salvation came into view. Right at this very moment however I suddenly found myself blinded. So I continued running in a desperate attempt to somehow reach the zone. I did not make it and respawned at the NL zone. I rushed back to where I thought I died (the ME zone border) and went to search for my corpse. Meanwhile my comrades had apparently already looked everywhere in the vincinity for my body; with no sign of it. After I had looked around myself, I decided to take a brief look into the ME zone itself. So I ran into the border and - poof - I was disconnected from the server. At this point I felt frustrated enough to uninstall EQ again.

Now ppl might say that I'm impatient and they'd have a point. However after three hours of installing, configuring, patching and configuring again, I expected somewhat more than 8 minutes of actual playing before dying (which isn't Sony's fault of course), having my corpse disappearing and being disconnected from the server (which in turn I _do_ blame Sony for).

Flame me if you want. Or post your sympathy. Or post similar/opposite experiences. I'd be interested in any of that... I did already share my 2 cp.

Sorry man no sympathy...

So you died because of player error (as you said not their fault)

You couldn't find your corps. (did you try a necro/sk/bard? doesn;t sound like it) You're corps would not be in ME is you didn't zone there. And you said it your self you didn't actually make it into ME so you can't even say it did.

You got disconnected. This could have been cause by like 100 different things. Your ISP, Sony's ISP, Any of the possible hundred other routers/switchs... that you go through to get to the EQ servers.

Sorry man but you got nothing to stand on here.

Thanks for your sensile reply, arkaria.

I did appreciate and consider your point. It is true that I didn't try to consult a GM/necro/bard to find my corpse, but believe me, my whole group spent almost 30 minutes in total searching for my corpse. And please consider the frustration factor: normally I simply would not have the time any more to play EQ. On a work-free day I try it again and the factor of invested time to actual played time was simply weak (3 hours to about 10 minutes); I get to the conclusion that EQ live simply isn't woth the money for me any more.

Dont get me wrong! I did enjoy playing EQ for a long tme. But now that I work for up to 11 hours a day, it simply isn't worth it any more. I would expect to log in, find a group after about 30 minutes and play for a few hours.

It's just that I keep thinking that I could have done something much more useful in those 3 1/2 hours (of which I spent 10 mins of playing). And the thought of actually paying money for this makes my hair go stiff.

Maybe I'm wrong blaming Sony for this. It's just that I liked EQ so much when I had much more time on my hands. Maybe I was just having bad luck when trying it again for the first time in a few months. Perhaps this whole discussion should be about EQ in general rather than my particular case. More opinions are very much appreciated!

One more thing: English isn't my native language, so please be patient with me about spelling/grammar. I'm just typing as it comes to my mind.

Hehe you can always do something more productive than EQ :)

Which is true of course! This is what I meant when I implied that maybe this discussion should be about EQ in general.

I did want to play a computer game and have fun doing it. There's nothing actually productive about it, admittedly. However I was simply disappointed about how my try to make use of this offer turned out to be a waste of time. At least I regard it that way. I mean no insult to any player nor Sony.

At least now you are aware of my whole story (and opinion): you need lots and _lots_ of time to be able to enjoy EQ adequately. And many people just don't have - or cannot spare - that time. Which is imho very unfortunate.

I am not at all biased negatively against Sony or Everquest. I had just hoped to get a few hours of fun out of it. But the game unfortunately just didn't satisfy this expectation for me.

One thing EQLive does have going for it (the only thing, just about) is connectivity. For example, there is only about one or two servers I can actually log on to on the Emu, it seems. Also, I was just playing a few minutes ago one one of those servers, and I had been logged in for about 15 minutes, when I got DCed. Kicked me to the login screen, so I tried to re-login. But almost all I'm getting now is 'Cannot connect to patch server.' The few times it DOES connect it gives me 'Bad username/password.' Believe me, I typed my password very carefully after the second time that error showed up, no capslocks, and it still gives me the error (when it does connect) at all). *sighs* Frustrating... its such a great emulator, and I hate not being able to connect.

(Oh, and BTW, I never got an email, though I haven't played EQLive in over half a year. But today, outof boredom, I re-installed EQ and DLed all the patches for every expansion (even the ones I don't own) so I could play the Emu again. On a whim I decided to try to log on to my account, and discovered I had '7 trial days remaining.' Which amused me enough to get me to actually play. Or try to. I spent about 15 minutes alternately trying to figure out some of the new GUI features and running when someone trained mobs to the zoneline in Dawnshrioud. Absolutely no one on, hardly, no talking, even in OOC, at all in any of the zones I passed through... just nothing. Total waste of time, heh. I would like Everquest,, but their mad quest for balance has succesfuly created a static, stagnant, overly sterile world of nothing. So I guess I will wait for Worlds of Warc raft. In the meantime, though, I wish the Emu'd let me play. ^^)

Ok, never the HELL mind. Got past the 'bad username/password' error, but I just spent the better part of two hours without EVER being able to connect to a server for more than a few minutes, and half the time eqgame.exe crashes. I think I'll go find something more productive and entertaining to do. Like homework.

I feel the same way about wasting time trying to get into EQ and play. But my grip is for a different area. I don't have even close to a good connection. I'm on the bare minimum of acceptable connection and not even the minimum for EQ suggested requirements (which is 28.8). My connection is a paltry 26.4 and unless by some miracle an area around where I live for about 25 miles is all done up with new wires and fiber optic (not to mention this 30+ year old house with original wiring) I'm not going to get a better connection.

It's either that or move or satillite (neither of which is cheap). :P

26.4? Holy Damn, man. Does EQ even run on that? ^^;;
