Allright, a LOT of people seem to have similar connection errors. I have them to. Here's the rundown:
1 - You've patched to the most recent version of EQLive,
2 - You've edited eqhost.txt
3 - You've edited datarate.txt
4 - You log in with your user id/password, and you see the server list.
5 - You select a server and click 'play.' At this point one of two things happens(A):
A1 - After a few moments, you are dropped back to the login screen. You log back in and get the 1017 error ('Could not login to EQ server...). This happens a lot, though eventually you might get it to load the worldserver, but then (see #2).
A2 - Either immediatly or after several 1017's (see #1) you get it to connect to the worldserver and load. Now you are at the character select screen. You select a char (or make a new one, whatever) and try to log in. It seems to be loading, but then one of four things happens(B):
B1 - You are dropped back to the login screen. When you log back in, you do not see a 1017 message.
B2 - You get a message saying eqgame.exe has encountered a problem and must close. This isn't connectivity, so we'll ignore it for now.
B3 - Nothing happens... It seems EQ has hung and the only way to exit is to end task it.
B4 - You manage to log in with your char. A this point, one of two things happens(C):
C1 - You play just fine, but eventually you die or try to zone and you get booted to the login screen, then the whole cycle starts over.
C2 - You get DCed fairly quickly, and end up back at login screen, and everything starts over.
C3 - You finish playing and log off, but when you come back you get connection errors all over again.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now to adress some of the common solutions that don't seem to work.
1 - Make a new character and do #movechar on the char you cannot login with.
--This might work for some situations, but in my case (and frequently I imagine) you cannot even log in with a NEW character.
2 - Read the NAT posts.
--The NAT posts seem to be about NAT issues setting up servers. Most of us aren't trying to set up servers, just log in to other people's servers.
3 - It is a dialup problem that might be fixed soon hopefully.
--Not for me, on a T1/LAN and I have the same problems.
4 - Run the EQEmuPatcher, then run the EQLive patcher again.
--Thought this worked, but after succesfully connecting once the problems all came back.
5 - ...(I think there were other's, will edit/add later if I remember.)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Allright, so. There it is, all spelled out. I know I am not the only one who has the issues. I have tried a couple things to fix the errors recieved from the character select screen on (having no idea what to do about world server connectivity), without much luck. But here is what I have done (aside from the above):
I noticed that making a new character usually allowed me to login with that char at least once. I speculated the issue might have something to do with the character INI files EQ stores clientside. I tried deleting them (several times), and that seemed to work, but again it was not consistent.
I noticed that the only char that really seemed to give me problems was the character in the first slot on char select screen. I tried making a "dummy" character to occupy this slot. Again it seemed to work, but only once or twice.
I tried a couple other random things as well, I think, but can't remember right now.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This isn't a matter of getting errors one time in five. This is a matter of having only one successful connection in several hours of trying. I don't know what the problem is, but if it IS a clientside problem, it is a very common one. Maybe there's posts somewhere where someone figured out some way to make this work better, but I have not seen them... If you know of such a post, please link it here. Or if you have any ideas/suggestions, also post them here.
And if you feel the need to voice your own connection problems, even if they are the same as what is detailed above, feel free to add those here as well, so that there will be some idea of how widespread this is. In fact, I would suggest making this a repository of connection problems like these, instead of having those problems spread across the boards over and over. If you do post your errors, please also make sure to also include your system specifications and/or other relevant info. Hopefully, there will be solutions found for these errors, as they are all that stands between me (and doubtless many others) and a highly enjoyable experiance with this wonderful emulator.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A few final notes: I apologize for the length of the post, but I needed to say it. ^^ I also apologize if there is some other place allready set up as a repository of connection errors; I didn't see anything, but that doesn't say too much, heh. Finally, I apologize if there are posts elsewhere that make this one completely redundant; This was something I wanted to say that I hadn't really seen said in complete form anywhere else. Oh, I suppose I should apologize for all the apologies too... :P
