Just wondering what kind of games C++ can be used to make. Also, i have a direct X book (tho, i'm not sure how C++ and direct X interconnect). Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Wow, um...take a commercial game. Any one of 'em. Chances are, it was written in C++ or some variant. Dunno if that helps...

And if a game *wasn't* written in C++ or a variant of it, it most likely could be. Almost every game I've seen was C++ (the ones that tell you their programming language, anyway.)

DirectX is the graphics engine (I believe?) behind the game(s). Not sure on details, I just know it's a big graphics thing. ;) Hope it helped!

Direct 3D is the graphics part of Direct X. Direct X is just Microsoft's bundled A/V API (I think?). Coupled with DirectSound, DirectDraw and DirectMonopoly you can create magnificent things....

(some parts of this information are fiction. some assembly required)

The real defininition:
"A set of APIs developed by Microsoft that enables programmers to write programs that access hardware features of a computer without knowing exactly what hardware will be installed on the machine where the program eventually runs. DirectX achieves this by creating an intermediate layer that translates generic hardware commands into specific commands for particular pieces of hardware. In particular, DirectX lets multimedia applications take advantage of hardware acceleration features supported by graphics accelerators."

Wow! Hardware independent! That's great! Except...errr...well, it's not OS INDEPENDENT... So let's just stick to Open GL as our graphics format of choice. :-D No reason to give M$ an edge anywhere else. Not to mention, in my opinion OGL has always looked better in the past.

Yeah, I am interested in learning all about that too. Hell, EQEMu has sparked my interest in C++ so much, that I picked up (and dusted off) the ole' Sam's Learn C++ in 21 Days book, though the #includes are a bit dated, the rest (so far) seems to still hold true. Also am using a WAAAY in detail book called Who's afraid of C++, which is cool as it TOTALLY teaches the most basic of how bits and bytes are related and accessed, and how C++ affects them, blah blah blah...

TOTALLY
Did I just say that and sound like a surfer dude? sheesh haha...

Not talking about the REAL surfers, talking about the stereo-typical surfer dudes... EG>>Jeff spicole <sp> Fast Times at Ridgemont High...."Do ya' know what that sound was dude?." "THAT WAS MY SKULL HUH HUH." "Those on ludes should NOT drive man."
In the 80's a surfer was totally different than a surfer dude....
