View Full Version : Min Sys Requirements???

Hi, I was just wondering if there are any tested minumum system requirements for running EQEMu? I seem to have everything working for running my own server, but when I click on the "Play EverQuest" button on the server select screen it blacks out and EQW stops responding... I have to Ctrl + Alt + Del and end task it to get anything to work again.
It is entirely possible that I'm having this trouble because my computer can't run anything when sys resources are down to 60% (which is where they are with everything running except EQW)... having a piece of shit, archaic, obsolete, 300MHz system kinda sucks ya know ;)(though the rest of the system isn't too terrible... 512MB RAM and such... not great, but not bad).
Anyway, I was just wondering if this is a prob with my system (most likely) or something else with the program or something (hardly likely). So, any help you can offer would be great, and if you can provide some info about basic min sys requirements and recommended sys requirements, that would be useful too for future refference when I actually have money to upgrade my system :).
Thanks, and take care,
Kyouchou

Are you trying to connect to someone elses server on gotfrags or your own? Also have you played Live EQ and have it bomb out in the same spot?
im running eqemu and eqw on my k62/350 with 512mb ram and i have had 5 people on as well as my playing on the host machine I don't have sol installed though.

ok I'm trying to connect to my own server... one which I create on my system through localhost IP in the login.ini file (is that file name right? I don't remember off hand) and using the MiniLogin.exe prog (the unsupported MiniLogin.exe file that works with version 0.3.0 of the emulator and can be found via a link in the thread in the general EQEMu board). Anyway, I've checked and re-checked and checked again to make sure that I've edited all the files I'm supposed to in order to connect via my own system. I've also tried using "localhost" in place of every "127.0.0.1" in the Boot5Zones.win9x.bat file with no change in the result.
I have played EQLive, and still do on occassion, I have never had this problem with it, also I can get EthernalQuest to work just fine (or rather as well as EthernalQuest works, which isn't very well).
Just in case it will make a difference I'm going to post my entire system specs:
AMD K6-2/300Mhz CPU
512MB RAM (256MB of PC/100 and 256MB of PC/133)
Asus P5A Super 7 Mainboard
IDE 11.5GB Maxtor HDD
32MB nVidia Riva TNT 2 graphics card
Some piece of shit, generic brand single channel sound card that's probably as old as computers
Hayes Dual Mode Universal 56K v.90 modem (not connected to the internet... I'm assuming that to connect to my own computer and use my computer as my own server via MiniLogin.exe that I do not have to be connected to the internet, I see no logical reason why the case would be otherwise, but if it is, let me know)
EQW 2.21 beta
Latest patch (ran patch for EQ last night before I tried to connect to myself to run EQEMu) for Original release, optional zones, Kunark, and SoL (I don't own Velious yet so I don't have that one patched).
Anyway, I have not tried to connect to the public servers via the internet to see if I have the same problem, I will try and do that sometime today or tonight, but I may not have time... If new information comes to light that I think might help you all help me, I'll post it here... if any of you have any other questions, just ask and I'll answer what I can. Also, I realize that the new MiniLogin.exe is not supported, but if anyone has been using it hand has not had similar problems or HAS had similar problems I'd like to know (maybe list your system configuration too).

OK a bit of an update...
I decided to try and connect to the other servers through the internet... So, I changed all the info in the necessary files (eqhost.txt; loginserver.ini; Boot5Zones.Win9x.bat) and ran the World.exe and Boot5Zones.Win9x.bat and went from there...
I got the appropriate messages in each window according to what the readme file says they should have been.
Ran EQW...
Made it to the server select screen just like I did when I tried without connecting to the internet before. Selected my server (that is the server listed that came up because I was connected) and clicked on the "Play EverQuest" button...
Thought it was going to crash again cause my eqw window was all black and nothing was changing for a really long time, but this time my mouse could move around (which it couldn't do the time I tried before that when eqw stopped responding and I had to "End Task") so I decided to let it keep going... About 15 minutes later I FINALLY got to the character creation/selection screen, successfully created a character and entered the world...
Things seemed to be going just fine, but I noticed that sometimes it took a really long time for the game environment to react to a command I gave it through the interface and I also noticed that the lag meter kept showing excessively heavy lag... After being in the game world for 5 minutes or less it diconnected me from the zone and sent me back to the character selection screen. I retried two more times and had the same result.
I got to wondering if this was just because all the information was being passed from my system to the eqemu.org systems and then back again and this might take a long time, so I thought I'd try to connect to my own server through the minilogin again and see if I could get it to work...
I set everything up for minilogin and edited all the appropriate files and such, and began to connect... Like before, it got all the way to the server selection screen without any trouble. When I was looking at the server selection screen I saw my server and none others, just as it should be, but my server was listed as "LOCKED"!?!
This may have been the case the last time I tried to connect through minilogin and I simply didn't notice, which I suppose could cause eqw to lock up and have to be shut down through the "Close Program" window that comes up when you do Ctrl+Alt+Del.
So now I have a couple new questions...
First, why does my server say it is "LOCKED" when I connect through minilogin and what can I do (if anything) to fix it?
Second, why is my connectivity so bad when I connect to myself through the internet and what can I do (if anything) to fix *that*?
And third, has anyone else had similar problems, and if so, what have you tried to do to fix it?
Any help, ideas, suggestions, condolences ;), etc. would be very much appreciated. Also, if anyone has any questions to ask me which may allow you to better help me, feel free to ask.
Thanks,
Kyouchou
P.S. I'm going to post the exact contents of the B5Z.bat, LS.ini, and EQH.txt files as I have them for each connect type...

I just had a thought, and if turns out to be right I'm gonna feel a little stupid, but...
When I connect to my own system through minilogin, my loginserver.ini file has no entries for the usename and password section... Should those both say "eqemu" without the quotes?!?
I'm gonna try that next I think and find out :)

OK, one more update...
I tried to run it on just my system with the username and password sections of the LoginServer.ini file filled out with the values of "eqemu" for both like I mentioned in my previous post.
I got the following messages in the Zone9x.exe windows:
Using database 'eq' at localhost
Loading items & NPCs...done.
Spells loaded from 'spdat.eff'.
Loading guild ranks...done.
Loading faction data...done.
Unable to get the host name. Error: 11001InitWorldServer failed
Entering sleep mode
So, I removed the "eqemu" values from the usename and password sectionds of the LoginServer.ini file and tried it again just to recheck what the messages I was getting before were, and I got the exact same messages, error included.
I don't think I got these errors when I was trying this before, but I may have, but in either case, this is probably why I'm getting the "LOCKED" status on the server when I get to the server selection screen.
If anyone can help me fix this, I'd be grateful, but I realize that this version of the minilogin.exe is not supported so it's possible that no one can help me with this issue. I'd still very much like to get the connectivity problems I'm having when I connect to the eqemu.org server system taken care of too though, so if anyone has anything to say that may help me with that it would be great.

Just a thought, did you ever create the eqemu login?
c:\eqemu>world.exe adduser eqemu eqemu 200
some of the databases have it in, some don't
Kyouchou
04-18-2002, 03:01 PM
Thanks, no I haven't tried that one yet, didn't know that the databases sometimes don't have it.
I'll try that one tonight or tomorrow and let you know what happens.
Thanks Again,

OK, I tried that adduser bit like you suggested and got a "Duplicate entry" error so I apparently DID have the eqemu userid and password set up in the MySQL database.
I'm all out of ideas for getting the minilogin to work but still very open to suggestions.
Also, I'd still like to hear some info and/or ideas about the connectivity problems I've been having when I connect through the internet... I have not yet tried to connect to anyone else's server through the internet, I'm going to try that next and see if the connectivity is any better... we'll see.

P.S. I may start a new thread with a different subject that is more relavent to issues at hand at this point and point people to this thread in it... if this is against the rules or anything, let me know.

also if you want to connect to someone elses server you don't need to run the EQEmu you just need to edit the eqhost.txt file.

Thanks Shortlived, I'll keep that in mind, but right now I really want to get my own server up and running...
I just downloaded and installed 0.3.1 as well as the emergency uptate and edited the files so that they are what they should be, but I haven't tried anything since before I changed my batch file as per Shawn's instructions... will post how things go once I try it all.
Kyouchou
P.S. gonna start a new thread concerning the problems I'm having getting minilogin to work... I still get the same errors even with the new minilogin that came with the 0.3.1 update of the emu.
