Yes, you are 'allowed', just patch to live (well I guess you have already) and edit eq host to the following:

[LoginServer]
host=newlogin1.eqemulator.net:5994

The reason it doesn't work is that eqmain.dll was changed last patch.

You'll have to find an older eqmain.dll or wait until a new release.
