View Full Version : Relief for Rangers

Everyone has seen Lord of the Rings, and everyone knows that rangers should be skillful with the bow and arrow, as well, if not better than the sword. Rangers in EQLive were deprived of the use of bows and arrows in how they were used only for pulling; at least I've never seen a ranger actually battle with one. I have been off EQ for some time now, and things may have changed.
Rangers could have the extra attack or two before the battle, since only monks (arguably) pull in later levels (Dont want a flame war, just stating that preferrably, monks usually pull).
Anyway, if I'm wrong (cause I am often), pls reply. This post is just to give the worldbuilders a few ideas.
Please post your ideas, suggestions, thoughts on the matter.

The problem with rangers as archers in live EQ is the small percentage of damage they produce per arrow. and the cost of arrows.
At higher levels I feel an arrow should produce between 50 and 400 damage. Make it agro, and accuracy/damage ruduced by motion... It has some potential.

The problem arises from the fact that archery has no minimum damage like primary hand melee.
How can Archery be made a valid form of attack? Quite simple.. use 2h weapon damage calculations (Using Dex instead of Str.)
Give bows ratios similar to equivlent level 2h melee weapons.
Make arrows non-depleting, or cheap and easy to aquire. Other options would be to make arrows salvagable, with a 1 in 3 chance of an arrow being found on the mob it was shot at.
For Rangers in EQLive , Archery is actually a valid form of attack now. Although, some conditions must be met. The ranger must have a decent bow, and good skill level. The ranger must be level 59, and have Alternative Advancement points spent on Archery Mastery 3(Improves damage by 100%), and Endless Quiver(Causes arrows to not be consumed). Against a Non-rooted, stationary mob, using the Trueshot Discipline, a ranger can get 300DPS against Raid mobs. Without Trueshot, they can do on average, the same or a bit less than melee damage.

acctually a couple weeks ago on EQLive archery was broken for a short time where the delay of a bow was 0 when you were above the mob the ranger DPS shot thru the roof and mobs dropped noticably faster =)
but they nerfed (fixed) it

I have seen rangers soloing with nothing but arrows before. They would snare the mob, cast sow on themselves and run and shoot it. This of course does consume alot of money though. I do think Rangers should get a massive boost in archery. I know that alt advancement has things for them, but I think that is a big joke. I mean as long as it takes to get 1 ap point you could have almost gained a level (I have been told it takes about the same time as it takes to get through lvl 51 for 1 ap point). This is assumeing you put all your exp into ap points. I have a necro and the permanant charm we was all promised is far from my grasp. You need 12 ap points for it, lvl 59, and you have to spend a ton of points in other areas before you can use it?
Just another way for them to keep people playing. A person could jsut about get lvl 100 (assumeing you could go past 60) before getting some of those things in the alt advancement.

Rangers have been fixed imho. The damage they do with a bow now is incredible. Especially if properly outfitted, post 51(chance to double damage), and with archery mastery....it's just nuts!

Anyone who thinks bows don't do damage at high levels is smoking the good stuff. I don't suppose you've ever seen a damage parse of a ranger with archery mastry + trueshot... they can and do outdamage many classes using their bow. The problem with that is LOS is required, and rangers w/bows cannot always be applied as effectivly as a ranger meleeing (Which they do well too, given the right equipment).

I can get a AA point in OS on EQLive within 5 minutes, it does not take 5 minutes to get from 51 - 52, maybe its like that, but, your fighting MUCH harder mobs when you would start to get AA points therefore making it much quicker..

FYI rangers (according to calculations double damage etc etc etc)
can do 4481 damage with a 33 damage bow!! while warriors usually (crit) hit for about 600 - 800 with a 51 damage axe! ranger damage not good enough? yeah, right...
