Changing Experience Modifiers

I searched a bit but did not find to much informarion on this with the exception of one post. From that post I gather that to up experience in zones that changes to the actual source must be made? Is this correct? I am attempting or wanting to tweak it so that experience does not take so long. I am not scared of source so if that is what needs to be done just say so. But would rather wait and see if there is a DB field for it first.

there are global settings in the 'variables' table which can up all experience.

there are also individual zone settings in the zone table to change the values.

neither require code changes.
