If I modify it to boot only 1 or 2 zones, will that still work and make my computer faster?

if you are the only one playing on the server then you only need to load 2..maybe 3 if you are zoning fast.. other then that you can load as many or as little as you want

Yeah, at least 2. With 1, when you try to zone out it doesn't have another zone to open up.

Since this question seems to come up very often I will put it into perspective here.
Boot 5 Zones means exactly what it says. You can have as many as you want to a certain degree and for each one you have you may have that many zones open at a time. For instance... If you log in and are standing in West commons and you are the only person on that server, one zone is being used. If you then walk from West Commons into East Commons, another zone is used for the new zone and after a time the first zone will go back to sleep after you are succesfully transfered. This means that at the very least you will allways want 2. Due to fast zoning when I am working out database problems I allways run 5. Obviously some of the more populated public servers would run more. A good figure would be running at least 2 for every person logged in. That would be an extreame, but it would mean you are safe just incase every single person is in a seperate zone. EQEmu run in a stand alone environment use for only you enjoyment really doesnt hog much for resources and I would think running 5 would be fine.
