Here is the question - Linux or Windows to run the emu on? Any particularly better? Any particular version of windows or linux ? Just seeing what the word of mouth is before I invest in a new box. ;-) Thank ya'll for all your hard work , and dedication to this project. Some of the creativity displayed here is astounding.

I have been running stable using fathernitwit (http://www.eqemulator.net/forums/member.php?u=46689)'s released binnaries. I am running under WinXp with no service packs at all and no windows updates either. world and zoneperl have yet to crash or generate an error report. The server has been up now for over a year.

Since i'm on linux with eqemu (debian sarge) i don't have any problems of crash/error and other problems.
But i think you can run Eqemu on a windows machine with stability if you don't use it for other thing.

My advice, try windows (if you don't know linux) and if that not good, try linux.

Im doing the same..Except Im using Serverpack2 binaries..I have had crashes but I have just upgraded to 6.3DR1 and get no more crashes.

some will say otherwise, but IMO linux is a lot better choice if you know how to use it, management of the server processes is a lot easier.

I've used windows 2k3 and ive had problems shuting down zones. Sometimes they dont leave process list and it requires a reboot, but im running my own and older compiles(6.0).

Ok I'm interested in this Gentoo Linux. May I ask what packages the devs use ? Probably whats going to happen at this time is I'm going to stick another hard-drive in and duel-boot Xp Pro / Linux . Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I started out with Redhat linux way back when ( think it was at 4.0 when I started ) , Ive since steered away from linux but am willing to give it a go.

(p.s. FTN what do you use as a development platform, and associated programs? Never hurt to ask. :D )

I am currently running Gentoo, and its the best system I've ever used.

Personally, I use Anjuta (http://anjuta.sourceforge.net/) as an IDE for most stuff, but for EQEMu, I usually just use some plain old text editor like nano or gedit (I don't have the patience to learn emacs or vi :P).

A standard installation of Gentoo + emerging mysql and perl will be all the libs and headers you need for EQEMu. GCC and everything, due to Portage's nature, is included. For a window environment, I recommend Gnome (http://gnome.org). Myself, I use a combo of OpenBox (http://icculus.org/openbox/) and gnome-panel from the Gnome suite. Some prefer KDE (http://kde.org) or XFCE4 (http://xfce.org).
