My friends and I have recently come across a personal server that we are thinking about dedicating to be a personal EQEMU server for the 6 of us (one full group) that we can play over LAN. I was wondering how this would work, and also does EQEMU have all of the original game content? (i.e. quests, etc) or will it not be comparable to the original EQ in its play?

Our wiki explaines how to do everything.
This is not EQ live, were far far from it.

I use the curent 841 server with Mr. Cavedudes database. There is a lot of content to see for a group of six, but with some unfinished things absent:
LDoNs, DoD missions, DoD zones, Monster Missions, Armor Quests and the newer content, AA's, OoW and GoD areas, and I think the Pottery tradeskill doesn't work (the others do).
Although you can #zone into some of the OoW Areas.
Given this though, you can have fun camping and hunting all the way to the Kunark, Luclin, and PoP areas, minus a lot of the quests. And, you may have to manually zone into some zones like Sebilis. The Emu is always being worked on by a nice crew of guys, so try to stay current with the updates. Headway has been made on fixing AA's and some people are working to add to the databases. But remember, it is an Emulator, they aren't perfect and are always in perpetual development.
For kicks, (and ONLY if you are very MySQL savvy) I use the Diablo 2 style drop mod here:
D2 Drop Mod (http://66.159.225.58/eqemu/eq.html)
It just makes random rare, quest and boss stuff drop that you ordinarily wouldn't be able to get. Once you take the time to carefully set it up (I set it to 10% across all levels).
But still there is a lot of fun to be had, and remember to use the MySQL tools to make dated, incremental backups of your databases before you make and changes or rules tweaks.

quick question on that D2 mod...
Anyway to scale the relative strength of the item that drops to the level of mob that drops it? i.e. so i don't get some random 'wooden shield' off my lvl 64 mob i just killed, rather it gives me something actually good for my trouble? or is it truely like Diable and i just get to mass kill and prey? :)

It's based on the level of the items so higher level critters drop better stuff. There is a help file with the mod that explains it more.

So, um, how is the Veeshan expansion looking as well? My friends and I are probably going to just start off on the EQ Trilogy (EQLive, RoK, and SoV).

The Kunark areas are spawned, I dont think the zone in for VP works (I;d have to re-check) but you can #zone in there. One thing I did once I got the Emu set up was to visit all the zones alphabetically and see if they worked.
(Oh, and boy do I love #scribespells <level>, it saves hours of running around trying to find your spells.)
@sesmar: Thanks!

That's my site with all the utilities and archived stuff. I like to collect anything useful for the emu project.
Glad you like the D2 drop program.

I just stumbled on this D2 style drop editor and am somewhat intrigued because I'm into slow, casual, solo play on my local server . But I'm curious about how it determines level ranges. At first, I guessed that it looked up reclevel or reqlevel but how about the lower level stuff? And how about the "uber" gear in say, Velious that doesn't have any req levels?

It's pretty difficult to autorange the level of items. I would use the uber weapons/armour for higher levels. For lower levels, set the percentage of MOBS to be lower or % chance accordingly.
Not every item can be autranged by an algorithm. It's pretty tough as it is...
