This is in regards to my post back on 05-06-2006. Yes, a long time ago, I know, but I fixed my problem, and I suppose there could be a chance that somebody else could have a similar problem.

For awhile, I played on a laptop with 256 Mb DDR and Intel Extreme Graphics (marvel at its splendor) because my primary desktop PC with the bigtime video card would always lock after clicking on "Enter World." I became dormant when I started messing around in Luclin for obvious reasons. Well, I finally fixed my main PC. The problem? RAM, it appears; nothing more.

Originally, my PC hung for several minutes and then booted my back to the server login whenever I tried to enter the world. Worked fine if I was playing on actual Everquest, and worked fine on my laptop, but not on my desktop PC. I could do everything else just fine; create a character, run around in the little area, whatever. Just not entering world. I had no idea what the problem was. I believe I submitted some crud to the dev team about it...never seemed to get fixed, though, likely because there was nothing wrong with the code. I tried it with my current version before the RAM, and it still locked. But now, its great.

I just recently purchased a 1 Gb PC2700 333 MHz Stick o' DDR RAM for my computer--yeah, shut up, my computer is old, I know. I needed to have my localhost Apache server for some other reasons, and my poor computer couldn't take the load and run Paint Shop Pro and run Microsoft Word and run Excel and run Firefox and run....etc, etc, etc. My computer is now sitting at 1.25 Gb RAM, instead of 256 Mb RAM (1 Gb = 1024 Mb, just in case you didn't know, but I assume you do if you're on this website.) Now, everything boots up fine; no locking problems whatsoever.

So, just a tip--if you're running a computer with a lot of crud on it like I am, and EqEmu is locking up despite correct versions and such, and you've exhausted all possible problems, then as a last resort, I suppose you might consider looking at your system resources. If you have piddly-crap RAM in your computer, it might be a good idea to look at an upgrade. This might not be a sure fix...but, if you've got some money laying around, and you've been needing an upgrade anyways, it might as well be worth a try.

So, back to chunking out a few perl quests in the next few days now that I've got motivation to keep going again...

Gratz on the solutions, and welcome back. :)

My server has way too much crap running on it. SQL 2005, Virtual Server hosting an Apache guest OS (yes, laugh, go ahead!) IIS6, a few websites, my webdev environment, basic Office crap, Dreamweaver, my product I QA here at work, and now - EQEmu w/10 dynamic zones.

Oddly enough, it runs rather well. But it is a P4 3.0 w/2GB RAM on a RAID0. I have plenty o resources, but if I ever get serious about this, I will need to dedicate a few machines to Emu alone. And give Apache a real home. :)
