Heya,
For thoses who rent a dedicated server, how much are you paying and for what kind of services?
Do you think that yours prices are very expansives?
If yes, what would be a decent price for a dedicated eqemu server?
Why I'm asking that is because I might be able to get some decent servers at a very competitive price very soon...
Have fun,
Mag

Wrong, all the bigger servers use dedicated hosts, and no they cant be sued for allowing you to run a server.

I know for a fact that Winter's Roar was hosted on a server in the USA and the ISP was hit with a copy of the C&D letter and they pulled the server.
Winter's Roar was reborn on a server outside of the USA as Shards of Dalaya.
It is possible for the ISP to be intimidated by a game company. They'll roll over in the blink of an eye if a company comes after them. ISP's don't want that kind of headache. I'd do some research on server hosting in Sweden. ;)

Thats simply not true.
you can pay anyone to host these servers and if they dump you.
just move to another Host.

No that simply is true...I don't think Sweden recognizes copyright law, so there's less of a chance of them doing anything about the server if it is hosted there.
Do some research into the activities of www.thepiratebay.org ...

Long live Sweden :-D

What does the pirate bay have to do with an EqEmu server? Don't they provide torrent downloads for illegal software?
That's what everyone (MS, etc) wants to screw them for.

You're missing the obvious...
COPYRIGHT LAWS DO NOT APPLY IN SWEDEN
So therefore game companies most likely can't do anything about servers hosted there...that's all...
Host it how you want, but I'm just telling you that I witnessed the largest EQemu server get shut down due to pressure from SOE... They were reborn as Shards of Dalaya afterwards (due to not being able to use the name "Winter's Roar"). Of course they're bigger after the shutdown now...last I was on there it was over 400 people online at peak times.
But whatever...host wherever you want to host. :) Not looking to argue with you guys. Have a good one.

the servers i'm talking about are hosted in france. As France and Islam are pretty much the same things, I'm not sure that they would care if Mr US (aka SoE) writes a mail at them.
the -only- thing that's ok in France are our Internet connections and the hosting companies but be careful...
In france, you steal a car, it's no problem. You fight a woman till she's almost dead, it's no problem. You fuck and launch rocks at the police, you burn their cars, it's no problem. You say to a white guy that you don't like his race, it's no problem.
But if you download a mp3, insult someone involved in politic, say 'nigger'/'arab' to a black/arab guy or you drive a bit faster than the authorized speed, you go in prison...

I know the EULA is not a law, but...
If you reference their trademarks and copyrights to promote your own endeavor ...well, they have some ground to stand on there.
I never said anyone is breaking any copyright law, because I would not presume to accuse anyone of such things. I'm just stating the possibilities of such things is all.

That doesn't mean Sony won't try and sue you, pretty much forcing you to give up.
A country like Sweden basically gives you immunity from them.

This has been beaten to death so many time,
No matter where your server is hosted YOU live in a place where the rules apply, nothing you do can change that.
SOE has gone after servers for hosting backpatchers, they have not going after any server that has not hosted files illegaly.
Right now most if not all the EQEmu servers are hosted in the US are are not being bothered.
Just dont host illegal files and you are not breaking any law and SOE wont touch you.
