Work Load Divi Possible?

By that I mean is it possible to split up the work load of a server so that more than one machine & connection are serving? If so what all could be split up so as to lessen the burden of 1 connection?

Actually I did, but being as I'm not exactly sure what I'm looking for I obviously wasn't perusing the correct info. I'll try to expand my search or something.
