View Full Version : Freedom Server (New server)

I just opened up a new server on a new dedicated server I purchased. I have an increased regeneration and exp rate setup and so far im planning on allowing it to be used more or less like a sandbox... I have #zone, #level, #summonitem and #searchitem enabled for all. Is there any kind of demand for a server like this?
I hope to provide some buffing npc's in specific areas, and some other custom changes, but for the mos part, I want to keep it true to the EQ world. What I could really use is a load test, and maybe some feedback to make sure people are able to connect :) I'm planning on running some static zones as well, mike the strarting cities, and some of the more favorite zones.
Any questions can be sent to me at haywards6@verizon.net and I will be doing everything I can to make sure its open 24/7 with a nightly backup.

How much did you purchase it for? $1.05? I hear that's the going rate on freedom.
In any case, yeah, there's a demand for servers like that. And who knows, you might wind up tinkering with it and decide to make it something a little more involved on your part. I know that was the case for me. Good luck!

I'm not sure what you meant by that statement... I bought a server "Hardware" and put the emulator on it to run around the clock, I didn't buy a database from anyone. Is there already a server named Freedom running? If that's the case I can change the server name. I just want to make sure I understand whay you're talking about here.
I see a lot of servers, but I don't know how many are up all the time.

I don't think he was talking about your hardware/software. I think he was making a joke about freedom being cheap.

Forgive me. It was a Team America reference (a film by the same gentlemen who do South Park and a few other projects). They usually do songs, one of which goes along the lines of "Freedom isn't free, it costs folks you and me. And if you don't chip in your buck oh five, who will?"
Didn't intend to hijack, just thought I'd slip in a little joke and wish you luck =)

LOL, I love that song! Haven't heard it in a while though. When he said "Buck O' Five", I always just thought of it as 105%, so I didn't even make the connection with your comment lol.
Not to derail the thread any further, I wanted to mention that it sounds like you are running the server from your house. When you said "dedicated server", I think most people think you are talking about paying for a data-center hosted server. No biggie, but I figured I would mention it. I was wondering how you were paying hundreds per month just to have a non-legit server lol. Didn't realize until you mentioned buying the hardware that it is probably your home PC that you are dedicating as a server.

Is there any kind of demand for a server like this?
That's the main reason I put up "A work in progress". And seeing as how there are nearly 4000 individual characters in the database since I put it up a little more than a year ago, I would say others like the idea also.
Unfortunately, everything else is taking up a lot of my time, so I haven't really been able to put much effort into updating & furthering the server, which is probably also why the max number of people I've seen logged in at once was around 10. There's also not a large amount of retention, meaning once players get to a certain point (mainly with PoP flagging), then end up going to another server or something else altogether.
One thing I would recommend to make the experience easier on those new to the server would be merchants with starting gear, that way you don't have to spend an hour finding good items to use.
In any case, I wish you the best of luck with the server, and if you have any questions about running a non-legit, feel free to ask :)

Sounds like you're making a Krusher's Semi-Legit server 2.0! Yea, there's demand for a server like that. Krusher's was really popular back in the day until he had to take the server down. If you need help with some of the programming parts of it I can help out. I was one of the head dev's on Krusher's for a few months. Wish I still had the quests I implemented on there though...got a new computer and now I don't have the files anymore.

Lan... I can get you the files. The reason i took the server down was problems with the code in as i could'nt run multi zone servers. I still have all the data and quests so PM me and i will give you access to DL the quests. I am working on getting the server back up later this summer.

hmmm, I probably could use some help. Aside from a little knowledge about writting quests and some database work, I wasn't really planning on making too many changes. My big issue with live EQ is speed of combat, so I hope to make some minor tweaks to min/max damage and probably going through the stats on all pets. I know people get bored with it when they are max level and get all the gear they want, but I was hoping to plan some sceduled zone pops and things like that. Maybe add some really cool click effect items that don't imbalance anything, but add a level of fun.

I like this a lot! I hate going through and looking up gear also :( It's not so bad as a GM since you can just go to CSHOME and get all the pretty GM stuff. I'll probably just start the players out with a certain amount of plat and then make the items cost a little bit. I was also thinking about making everyone start in the same zone, maybe PoK to help keep everyone close by and maybe add a common zone teleporter and a translocate PoK stone... just ideas, its tough trying to make a less populated game feel more populated. NPC buffers will help with that as well.

It's a spare computer I put together just for this reason, and it's dedicated to running this server only. I hope to make good use of it by running some static zones, and hopefully a good number of players. Mostly it's just a sandbox and I hope people will check it out and enjoy themselves. I've been leveling up a Necro on it to test, and it's going quite well.

I took it down untill I get that figured out... I think there may be a server with that name already. I'm also doing some quick changes to pets in the npc table. I'm doing the basic update that will update HP and min/max damage... Once I have that completed I'll bring it back up and leave it up.

That'd be great Krusher, thanks. If you get the server back up and running, definitely let me know. I have nothing else to do this summer, the last day at my summer job is next week since football two-a-days start back up so I'll have plenty of time for scripting! I still wanna finish that 4 mini-boss/1 big boss scripted event in plane of time I was working on.

I brought the server back online this morning after doing some quick maintenence. I can't tell how everyone is doing, but it looks like I have 12 new characters that have logged on... I just accesed the pc and saw that Zone had crashed, and I've never seen that before. I'll be taking a look at the logs later tonight to see what happened.
Thank you,

Things are going pretty smoothly so far. The server came down last night because I forgot I had automatic updates on and it rebooted :( got that fixed. I had to move max level back to 70 and it will probably stay there a while since thats not my main focus. I have done a little work on necro pets, and I'll be testing those changes out before touching the other pet classes. I also did an overall critical chance upgrade across the board, with warrior types and Berserker's having a greater chance to crit. If I get some time this weekend (I have company over) I hope to get a few merchants setup in POK with some starting gear and maybe some quests for unique items.
Let me know if you need any assistance, we're up to almost 30 characters now :)

I took the server down last night to make some changes to the database. I'll probably be putting it back up tonight after I have that work done. There are so many changes going in that I didn't want anyone playing on it untill it was done... I'm adding some venders and buff bots to the PoK main bank so we can have some good gear with less effort, and make solo play a little easier. I'm also going to add a translocator and a quest guy that will hand out special gear after you complete his quests.
The first big opening night taught me some valuable lessons... One thing was the zone server only being set to 5 and none of us could zone :) I cranked the available zones up to 100 and I even added 25 Static zones (All the starting cities). I haven't seen a great deal of payback on running them static though, the speed that the emulator is able to open up a new zone and use it is impressive! I'll probably change some of the hot spots to static so it feels more real.
Thanks a lot to everyone that's been playing, and I appologize for the down time today. We have over 50 characters from around 30 acounts now, and it's been great seeing you all on there.
hayward6
07-30-2008, 12:11 PM
I had to shut the server down :( I was getting way to many crashes after the level roll back. I'll be running it in test at home for a while to get the kinks worked out. I'll likely be putting the server back out there but with some restrictions on items and levels :( I think the problems were from characters having items they probably shouldn't have, or the emulator didn't understand. I know I recieved a report from two people that their item icon looked like neclaces...
I'm working on some merchants and buff bots that should help people out by offering free levels and equipment, but the actual level command and summon command will have to be removed.

Just a thought, have you added anything to the database and possibly skipped ID #s in the database? I know when I was adding NPCs for a quest on Krusher's server I skipped a number in the NPC database by accident and it sent the entire server screwy for a few minutes until I realized what I did.
Again, just a thought.

I think you're right... I did have some issues with some new spawns. For now I've wiped the server and have put the commands back on, from now on I'll be backing up the character tables so we wont hopefully need a wipe again. I still have some plans to add stuff, but im going to hold off for a couple weeks.
players will have access to the following commands
#heal
#mana
#zone
#goto
#level (max is 65)
#setallskills
#setaapts
#findspell
#scribespells
#itemsearch
#summonitem

I did a stupid thing, and fell in western wastes, and died. There was some guy on there last night who ported me to get there, but wasnt there to get my body when I died.
I'll get it tonight.
Do you have an email addy I can email you at, at all? I have a few questions I'd like to ask you and not fill up this forum full of questions.
On a quick note. When I zoned into POK last night, and haild the NPCS, none of them responded. I went into POJ, and none of the tribunal guys would respond either.

To Rabbi dan-
Why even complain? Some people enjoy walking around being able to kill stuff on their own, or with a friend so you dont need 50 people on at once. it is fun for us and just leave it at that. I can log in tonight, play for an hour, and get done what would take 3 days to do with a guild.

Obviously it wasn't a simple question because you didn't have an answer for it. I just don't see the draw, and I don't know why people throw up servers that they've put zero effort into (like the majority of the servers). Maybe I'm the only one that feels this way though!

You don't have to understand though, it's ok to have different opinions. I still play on live, and I like the ability to explore a zone on the emulator first to get a feel for what it's like. There are many reasons to play on a server like this.

On the NPCs not responding, he probably hasn't filled in any of the quest files for them. It's been a while, but I believe most NPCs on the emulator (depending which database you're using) don't come with all of their original quest scripts and what not. It could be something else, but that's probably one of the more likely answers. I'd wait for one of the more knowledgeable people's opinions though. I don't have THAT much experience with the emulator.

Like what Hayward and Krebulax said, one of the reasons people enjoy these servers is for the simple fact that you don't need a raid of 72 people to take down some of the harder bosses.
And, excuse me, but running a server, even one like what Hayward is running, is not a "zero-effort" job. I worked on Krusher's for a few months and it's a lot of work if you're dedicated to it; especially if you're adding in new content such as quests, items, events, custom NPCs and whatnot. It adds up pretty quick and if you're not careful it can be a pretty time consuming project depending on how good you are at coding and how many tiny typos you make in your code. Try running a server of your own like the one Hayward is running, update the content and work out some of the bugs involved in it, and then come back and say if it's a zero-effort job.

I just pulled the #level command and created an npc in PoK that will level you to 65, increase your skills, and scribe spells. I'll be adding merchants and some special quests sometime this weekend.
hayward6
08-05-2008, 08:01 AM
Armor and Weapon merchants have been added in PoK at the main bank. I split the venders up by armor type (Cloth, Chain, Leather, Plate) and there's a Weapon merchant that sells all the Epic 1.0 weapons (By sell, I mean they give them away)
I also have a special quest npc there that I hope to start using by this weekend. My plan is to have that npc request a specific item (Thats why summoning will be going away) she may give some hints... but for the most part I want your knowledge of eq lore to help you track down the item or npc that drops it. The rewards for completing her quests will be great! and she should have a new quest each week.
I'm not ready to pull the #summonitem command yet, but I will be soon.

It was pretty good seeing some people playing last night. I saw someone two boxing in Veksar and paid them a visit and then I saw the best thing you can see on a non-legit server... I saw a level 6 Gnome Pally in Kurns Tower actually playing the game :) He was of course outfitted far beyong what he should have, but he was enjoying some good old leveling.
Kreb and I woke the Sleeper for fun and it was amazing watching that! It's been reset, maybe some day we'll get a group together and really pull it off.
For new players, I have enabled Glooming Deep and have been leveling my own mage in there, I love that zone. If you talk to the Exit guy "Arias" he'll send you to your starting city. I haven't removed #Zone yet, but it's coming soon. I have a translocator in PoK and I think I'll give everyone an item that will take them to PoK, but beyond that I don't want free zoning and the explouts that go with it. I'm also planning on doing some special merchant work... we're all wearing the same armor :)

Ok, a little update :)
We're up to over 200 accounts created now, and although we're not as busy as some servers, its stable and the people playing seem to be enjoying themselves; I just made some changes across the board to pets. I have double their HP and Damage to help bring them inline with what I feel they should be on a low population server. Please let me know how its working out for you.
I also wanted to give a brief comment about items and zoning so you're not surprised when you log in. Everyone starts in Toutorialb. Wen you're ready you can move to your starting city, and when you get to POK theres a leveler waiting for you there. There are merchants selling epics and level 65 gear and a translocator that will also give you an itm that allows you to gate back to pok. I'll be removing the zone command soon, but it wont really be needed anyways :)
Looking forward to seeing you!

Nice. I like being able to bounce around from zone to zone. I'd keep the #zone command for everyone. You need a jewlery vendor and some bard armor. Otherwise I like being able to jump around and kill stuff. It's fun soling dragons :)
hayward6

I've been adding armor and weapons to the free vendors as I find stuff that looks nice... If there's anything that you feel should be on there, please let me know. I'm going to add a bag and jewelry vendor tonight... can't believe I didn't think about jewelry sooner :) I put the Bag of the Tinkerers on one of the vendors for now, of and I went ahead and lowered the requirments to 65 on the fabled spear everyone was asking about ;)
Also, yeah I think i'll be keeping the zone command in... Now that I don't seem suffer zone crashes, or ghost logins I don't see anything wrong with it. I want this server to be fun for everyone, and I do have plans to add special items and quests... I just lack the time :)
I'd like to hear some feedback on pets though, going through and buffing all of them took some time, and I want to fine tune them where needed.
Thanks for all the feedback so far! we're up to over 300 accounts now!

Just a suggestion but you could put something like Hayward's or Silverwolf's infront of the name. Though I am always able to find it with ease even with the other 2 or three that start with Freedom.
On a side note, have you considered allowing #peqzone instead of #zone. Seems to keep people from bypassing content to get at named mobs. I think it also can not be used if the character is engaged, removing the instant escape route, but I could be wrong.
hayward6
08-26-2008, 01:15 PM
Good suggestion, I'll check it out. I don't really want to restrict anyone too far, the main reason I put the server together was so it could be used as a sort of sandbox for everyone to enjoy. I just don't want one person to zone in to every end zone, kill all the bosses and then log out leaving everyone without those bosses. What I would love to see is a few people banding together to take those bosses on, If I could get that number of people on at the same time and really working together I would be more motivated to create new reasons for them to do that.

ok, server has been renamed to Sayin's World and I've bumped the level up to 70. I was also notified about a bug today regarding the plane of knowledge brochure not showing up on characters and then not letting you get another due to it being lore... rather than removing the lore title and covering up the issue, I have removed it from starting items. Go ahead and reroll if you have a character like that, or let me know and I'll clear the inventory for you.
Almost forgot... I'll be going through the item vendors tonight to get them selling better gear for level 70 and also jewelry and other misc items.

I think I see what happened there. A ton of zones have a minimum status of 100 for some reason. I changed the ones you mentioned, but doing more than that might be a bad idea... in PEQ they may have done that with some bugged areas. I'll check it out tonight.

I went through the zones and tested out many of them. Basicaly if its been locked it's because the loot isn't done or some other item is missing. I'll open them up and see if I can get started on that.
I also replaced all the memory last night with brand new... I can't believe the mismatch of ram I had in this box... lets hope this helps.

Server isn't too bad man, a few suggestions:
Cleric armor isn't listed on plate merchant, would be nice to have some mana. There's also no shield or anything else cleric can use besides 1.0.
Groups get bugged, a lot.
Would be awesome to have #itemsearch and #si, would make me play the server a LOT more if you had that.
Anyways, you're putting a lot of hard work into this and it's going very well, just wanted to put a post up of my opinion.
Take care!

I agree with ruude. Also, I'm not sure what the respawn is supposed to be but Naggy has been down a few days now. (killed him on Mon or Tues i think). Killed Vox tonight.
I'm really enjoying the server. I'm two boxing it with a SK and cleric. It's a good time.

I won't be adding item summoning due to the exploits that can come from it... just how it is. Groups are bugged across most servers right now, I'm waiting for the next update to address that, keeping my fingers crossed. I know the vendor armor is bad, I need to replace it but I need the time to do that. I went all through it the other night and some of the items broke the server :(
My biggest fall back on updating items is not knowing what the best stuff is that works in the emulator, so it takes time to research each class. If there's an item you want and I'm online just ask and I'll drop it in your inventory... I should be around more this weekend... been real sick, and sitting here editing tables is not high on my list when I'm feeling this bad.

Nagafen should respawn in 7 days, and Vox in 5. I really don't have any plans on directly changing spawn timers any time soon... I like Everquest for what it is, and I'm trying to keep things accurate but a little easier. Were you able to fight your way to those bosses, or did you just zone to them?
evil_sexual_tomato
08-29-2008, 07:12 PM
I fought my way to them. At level 70 with 2 toon's it isn't that hard. But I've been messing around on the Plane of Fear, Hate, and Nightmares with my enchanter and SK. It's actually pretty fun. It's not raid difficulty with 2 level 70's, but the stuff deeper in the zones offers a 2 man challenge which is really what I wanted. The boss for Kael and Cazic-Thule (the god) pretty much kicked my arse all over the place. I'd need a group to do those. It's fun. I'm legitimately AA leveling. I've also been gearing my toons with stuff from the raids.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank hayward for putting this server together. I had originally joined EQEmu a few months ago with the hope to explore a "sandbox" style world - to enjoy all of the elements of EQ that I was never able to years ago, as I didn't have the time to spend on grinding out levels and practicing skills. Most of the other servers provide interesting versions of that idea, but the custom content and "reduced grind" is still a nuisance. Sayin's World is, by some margin, the best experience I've had on EQEmu, and, at this point, it's the only thing keeping me coming back. So, thanks very much, and please keep up the good work!

I completely agree and echo your sentiments. I've always wanted to just have a relaxed 2 man raid experience without giving up my life to get characters able to do it. Finally I can buzz around from zone to zone and get to see just how much of the EQ experience you can miss.

I'm so happy that you're enjoying yourselves!
I got into EQEmu for the same reason a few years ago because I wanted o be able to see the zones I wasn't quite ready for in live. I still maintain and play all Sony games on the all access pass, and it's great to scout out a zone im getting ready to enter on live eq.
As long as exploiting is kept to a minimum, and nothing anyone is doing is bringing the server to its knees... I'm happy with what ever anyone wants to do :) If there's any specific items you need, please let me know.

Is there any weapon that is comparable to the Soul Crusher that is a permanent one? It know it's a ridiculously powerful sword but when you're 2 manning it it's actually just about perfect. The damage is enough to kill things but when you fight level 65-70 raid mobs it still takes a good 5-10 minute battle. Actually, that's the fun part!
When you say the loot tables aren't complete for zone like sebilis, wall of slaughter and the time planes does that mean no servers have them? (I have no idea how server operation works)
I think the cloth and leather vendors need to have updated armors because they're only level 63-64ish. I think chain too but I haven't checked.
Anyhow, great job and keep up the good work.

Some servers have them updated and others dont. It depends on if the server op has found the .sql loot tables for them and imported them into the database or not.

Just want to echo what some others have posted. This is exactly the type of server I was looking for. Was hoping to find a sorta playground to explore, see, and do things I was never able to do when I originally played the game.
I started about 3 months or so before Kunark came out and stopped playing about 4 months or so after PoP came out.
I really didnt like the original raids that required 30+ people and never got into them (hence, there was a lot of content I never had access too). With this server I am able to start seeing the stuff I never could so thanks. I'm certainly having a blast.
I do have a question about some quests. I tried doing a couple and could get the text for everything and even do miniquests that are part of the larger quest but everytime I turn everything in for the final reward I dont get anything (Lodizal Shell Shield Quest and Lost Map Quest). This is my first time ever with EQEmu so is this a normal issue? Should we not be trying to do quests? I was just assuming if I could trigger the text to start them they would work? Is that not the case?
Thanks again for your hard work, its appreciated.

My ranger is tearin' stuff up.
A couple bugs i noticed though.
Tomes/Combat Abilites, for some reason are in the spell book.
Leaving pure bred melees unable to get there abilities. (I tried on my monk.)
and as for rangers.
Hail of Arrows isn't working properly.
It just says the target is to far...even if you're right next to them.

Make sure you try that ranger ability in several zones... that will help me determine if it's map related. I'm not familiar with tombs and discipline stuff, since I've never played anything but a caster... Tell me what's missing and I'll get it added. Might be easier to just turn the command on for everyone to raise them. Once I understand them, i'll add it to the leveler. There was a lot of activity this weekend, and it was good to see.
I'm planning on doing some work tonight on some broken quests, i'll have a look at the monk abilities as well.

I've tried Hail of Arrows in:
The Overthere
Skyfire Mountains
Chardok
And all just gave me some errors.
I'll definitely try in every zone I'm in though.
As far as the tomes things go.
It's not really a big deal (for hybrids.), all that it's doing is making it so instead of
CTRL+C (I think that's combat abilities.)
Instead of popping up as hotkeys, it's in the spell books and can be put into spell gems as a spell.
Which, initially isnt that big of a problem for hybrids, just means they have to manage their spells better.
But as far as pure melees go..they aren't able to use any of them because they can't pull up the spell book/spell gems.
But all around, amazing server and im definitely here to stay, especially once some things are smoothed out it will be A++++++x1000.
Btw, did you take teh weapons merchant out just a bit ago? :P

Well last night was an interesting time. We had about 15 players logged on, and thats the most I have eve seen on this server. So we're deffinetly growing slowly but surely. xSUFIx ran a pvp event in the arena and asked everyone to create a level 1 pally to attend :) it was fun to watch, the hightened regen on the server made it almost impossible unless they teamed up and some random weapons were spawned to help out. This is the first of many little events we hope to have
The winner last night was Goodloona, and she was rewarded with a title, and epic 2.0 for the character of her choice went to Loonie
Congratulations!
Some things that came up last night I want to address here.
Gear and content. The vendors are carrying what I felt was good gear for level 70... it's by no means the best, simply because I dont know what the best is. If there's anything that you would like to see added, please message me on these forums and I'll add it to the vendor, or your inventory.
Special Items. I will probably be added things like J-Boots and other gear to the vendors, but really unique items that exist in live and are really rare will be reserved for prizes and quest rewards. I will also be adding some server special items in time that will be added to the pool of reward items.
Server Forum. I didn't want to do it, but I think I need to start up a website and forum... We're getting busy enough that I think it would help.
Zones. Yes many zones are closed, and although I can open them... they simply aren't done and for the most part have no loot tables setup. I opened up Timeb and wallfoslaughter last night so you can explore, but don't expect a lot of action content. I really don't mind opening them all up, but I don't want complaints that the loot is missing, when I know it is.
Events. Right now I have one extreamely active GM, I can't tell you how much help that is! We will be planning some little social events with good rewards, and here are some ideas we have discussed.
pvp event - happened last night, and it was a good time.
Naked Gnome Race - Start a level 1 gnome and run from one area to another. (With zoning speed due to peoples computers we might have to keep it to one zone... maybe even make it a swimming race across iceclad or something :) watch out for them turtles!)
Bounty Hunt - We place an NPC somewhere in the world and give you a clue about where he is. The player that returns with his head is the winner ;)
Any other ideas that poeple have are more than welcome!
I've really enjoyed running the server, and with cold weather coming I hope to have much more time to devote to it. We're not going anywhere!

One other thing to mention... I want you to think of this server as your sandbox. It's meant for fun, and hopefully a place you can see and do things you didn't get to in live EQ. If you want to level its a good bit faster, and if you simply want to auto level to 70 and gear up to kill stuff in high end zones, please feal free to do that! Anyone not happy with the way things are should talk to me or a GM about it and see what we can do for you. If we can't or don't change things the way you like there are plenty of other servers out there being run by people with much more skill than myself. I'm simply an Everquest fan that wanted a server where I could explore a zone before going to that zone on live (Yes I still play live EQ... SOE All Access for the win!). Thank you

Just wanted to drop a thanks to Treshu the GM for "escorting" some of us around last night and spawning some stuff for us to tangle with. My personal favorite was the Boss that hit for 8k and knocked you unconsious...heh, needless to say I lasted all about 1.5 seconds. On the plus side though, I dropped so quick my Cleric didnt even have time to get a heal off so never drew aggro and managed to survive the encounter with her :)
On a side note, for any planned "encounters", as much as I hate to say it, its probably best we leave that Uber Sword in our bags. It really seemed to make things hard to balance for the GM when you are quad hitting for 4k and is probably unfair to the Pure casters....just a thought.

Just to clarify...I found out what the issue was gaining access to Vex Thall.
That Scepter of Shadows was the original "key" to enter the Palace. Anybody can zone into Vex Thall by entering via Umbral Plains or the #zone Vexthall command. However, a key is needed to actually enter the building inside Vex Thall. The Scepter was the original "key". Things were changed by Verant (darned if I know when though) and they made entrance to Vex Thall not require the Scepter of Shadows ("key"). I would assume because the quest to get the Scepter of Shadows is so long and time intensive to get nobody would enter the zone anymore if they had to do the quest for every single toon who wanted to enter after other expansions came out (I am pretty sure the original intent was EVERYBODY had to have a key to enter...not just one person in the group with a key to unlock the door).
What they did though was still make the entrance into the Palace require a key but the "Scepter of Shadows" was deactived and they put a "Palace Key" on a mob outside of the Palace but on the walkpath to the Palace from Umbral Zone in.
I think what happened is that mob with the key (and it only requires 1 person to unlock, not everybody needs the key on them) does not respawn with the other normal mobs (around maybe 6 min or so?) but is on a seperate timer and maybe only spawns every 24 hours or something because I visited the place a few times but could never get inside and never saw the mob that had the key up. So if somebody else kills it there is no way for anybody else to get a key apparently for a bit (how long I dont know...guessing 24 hours or longer).
It is apparently a "named" but hard to tell because all the mobs names in the zone are confusing (no articles like "a" and "an" to differentiate named from common). It was some form of larger rock thing that you see at the zone it and it had the "Palace Key" on it.
Hope that clears up what the confusion was earlier.

thats not how it was
l my guild did VT in summer 2004 (just in period between GoD and OoW releases)
You needed a sceptor key to enter the VT itself- which was an ass long camping shard quest + Emperor of Sssra component drop
EVERYONE needed to have this key to enter VT
this was the key just to enter the zone.
in the court yard you had to kill a giant stonegrabber mob called Va... something - who droped the palace door key. - you only need 1 such key.
The Va... was on 1 hour respawn timer, and took our pre-elem geared 2 groups 45 min to kill (a shit load of hp)
Inside VT there were some more keys which were locking out the door into Main hallway
atleast one of the Mini-bosses before main hallway had to be killed for this key
inside the main hallway there were 2 towers on the first floor, and at least 1 of the Tower bosses had to be killed in order to depop the wardens leading to the 2nd floor.
with 8 pre-elem groups it took us rathly 5 hours to do the 1st floor on day 1, camp the mage at the portal to 2nd floor, and another 4 hours to do the 2nd floor on the day 2 inclduign Aten Ha Ra kill.

Heh, I was going off websites I read. I had never been there before.
Boy, that sure is a lot of work though...
p.s. Just wanted to add that the problem was all me to begin with. I misunderstood what I had read online for what it took to get into Vex Thall. I had zoned into Vex Thall from Umbral Plains oringinally without the Scepter of Shadows so when I read that you needed one, I just assumed it meant to actually get into the Palace not to zone in.

Wow, that makes Everquest sound hard. :D
thats only the part of the story =)
the VT Sceptor consisted of:
the Sceptor frame (box) - rathly 2 hours of camping with atleast 2 groups to have enough dps to kill phs fast enough
the 10 shards - took me personaly 2 month to get them all with camping them rathly 4 hours a day (3 month to get themf or entire guild - 60+ people)
the Emperor Ssra drop - this one a whole separate story on ist own:
you needed to get internal Ssra key-ring to get to the Emperor Chamber- rathly 1 week of camping 3 hours each to get all 4 parts
kill Emperor of course - no trivial task
travelign around VT- is another major pain - trash mobs repop at machine gun rate, hit in 800+ range and have 200k hp each, and come 5-6 at a time
a hallway path from oen named to naother had 50+ of these guys to clean up
I swear in was much harder to clean out the trash than to kill actual named.
and of course entire Vt had to be done in specific order - you had to kill specific named first to dispawn the wardens or you could not get to the 2nd floor. Wardens themselve could not be killed all had Death Touch
of course after all this pain- VT was truly a candyland for loot even 4 expansiosn later. The gear was MUCH better than Tier 3 PoP (inclduing gods like LMM, Saryrn, TT, Bertox and even Ro) but somewhat worse than elemental.
but the good part was than each named was droping 5-8 items at once!
During our first clearing the guild scored a total of 25+ truly nice items - it would taken us a YEAR of farming Tier 3 pop gods to get this much gear
Out of all time in EQ VT was my favored raiding ground - i could realy feel all the time invested was WELL paid off
ofcourse elemental or GoD items were way better but that was entirely diffirent level of dificulty. Our guild marched victories in VT was ripped to shreds on lowest rank raids we atempted in GoD, like Smith Rondo event =)
of course once DoN come out in 2005 with raids for casual players with ala-ldon style points reward system, VT was quickly adandoned

Sorry Guys, i just got in from a business trip to Chicago and never had a chance to check the forums or server status... I'll reset it right now. I probably should have mentioned that I would be away.

Im not sure if I am the only one running into this (maybe Im not even doing it right).
I was trying to do some PoP flagging and some of it involves being transported to an Instance to run an encounter. I cant seem to get my entire group sent into the Instance. Basically, whoever initiates the text in the group is the only one sent over. Needless to say this is causing me some issues.
I am running 3 toons but I cant even find a way to get just 2 of them in at a time.
Also, what I have noticed with groups is that whoever I have invite people and create the group is the only person who can "see" in the group box all the other group members. My other group members dont have anything showing up in the group box. I have tried to have the group leader initiate the text for the instance hoping that because the entire group shows up on their screen that the full group would be sent to the instance but still only the 1 person.

I logged in to the server yet none of the commands are working. Is this intentional or something that's being worked out?
Thanks :)

I guess that depends on what commands you were trying. The only command I know of that works for the average player is #zone.
There is an NPC in PoK that will level you and there is free gear on the merchants behind the leveler.
The #summonitem and #itemsearch do not work for the average player.

Oh, yeah - that's what I was trying to use was #summonitem and #itemsearch.
I would really like to use these two commands. I was logged onto this particular server a couple of days ago and could use the commands just fine so I'm not really sure what changed...?
Are there any servers out there that have them enabled for the average player?

correction for the above post.
It was not the freedom server. I just can't remember what server it was. It was a non legit server where i was able to use #level, #summonitem, #setaapts, #zone.
Are there any other servers that have those commands allowed?

Yes, this server DID have those commands enabled, but they are now disabled.
As for any other servers having those commands enabled for anyone, I am unaware of anyt.

Due to some exploits that can be used with the #summonitem command I had to remove it. If that exploit was a simple balancing issue I wouldn't care, but used excessively it can cause server stability issues from the insane number crunching.

/nod. it's a pretty powerful exploit.

I hate to do it, but I'm going to be pulling this server down this week... I just don't have the time to devote to playing, nevermind making any changes. The people logged in have been between 3-8 most times and a peak of around 12... I just don't see a reason right now to waist power keeping the server running.
There are so many other servers out there that have staff, skill, and resources to better the emulator, and this server is simply taking up space on the login server at this time.
I want to thank everyone for their support, and company over the past 2 months, and I am truely sorry that it had to end like this.

Sorry to hear this. I did have some fun though. Saw more rares and killed more dragons in 3 weeks than I did in 3 years of playing Live.

Nooooo
Well it was fun while it lasted. I've killed more dragons, gods, and raid mobs with a duo this last month than I have in 5 years of playing live.
