I don't really know how to setup a server. So I am wondering if someone will connect to my laptop (acting as server) and set it up so that it has a basic server running populated with items and monsters. Let me know.

Having someone else set it up won't really help you... much of the learning process of setting it up comes in handy down the road when you want to update, or edit content. If you're not willing to devote the time to setup, you might as well just play on another server. Trying not to be an ass here, just making sure you know that it takes some dedication to this project to really appreciate it.
