static zone method?

I searched all through the forums and wiki yet I can't seem to find anything saying how to launch static zones.

I experimented a bit and found "start zone shortname" would start a static zone but every static zone ends up with its own window.

Is there a "proper" way to do this that doesn't have a separate window for each zone?
