View Full Version : Unable to see server list

I've been browsing the forums/faq section for several hours. My issue is that I can log into the login server, but once connected, there are no world servers in the main window. I've tried port forwarding, straight up turning off my firewall (we don't use a router here). I've tried all of the vista/dual-core fixes. I'm at my wits end, I've found other threads on the forum where people have similar problems, but not found anything that helps. I've tried to login to the server at least 10 times today, never getting any server list. This computer is pretty sucky, but I don't honestly see that impacting me seeing the servers. It's a Gateway GT5428. Anyone got any ideas?

Jeez, been a member for 6 years and this is my first post... I feel like a noob.

Have you ever been able to see it, or is this your first time trying on that PC/Installation? Are you sure you are using Titanium? Do you have a firewall on?

I would maybe try reinstalling a legal unpatched copy of Titanium and see if it will make any difference. It could be some other settings too, so maybe just clearing out your eqclient.ini would fix it, I dunno.

This is a fresh install, first time trying to run it on this machine. I didn't patch the game, but I will give reinstalling a shot. I've tried running with the firewall on and off, to no avail. I'll give eqclient a shot and get back to you.

Edit: eqclient didn't help.

Alright, I've re-installed from scratch, still the same issue, any other ideas?

If you are actually getting logged into the server selection screen, that rules out network issues. You would at least see them if you can login successfully. Sounds like your running the wrong client. Titanium?

That's what the box says. Running titanium unpatched, I should be able to see a server at least.

Idk if this means anything, but i have 3 comps - 2 can see list, 1 cant. the one that cant is a fresh windows instal SP2 and a fresh titanium instal.

Yep, having the same problem. In my case, though, I installed titanium on my laptop at my brother's house and ran it once to make sure it worked. It worked on my brothers internet connection etc. The next day when I got back to my apartment and used a different internet connection I didn't see any servers. I'm thinking some port here is being blocked on the network I'm using that's interfering with my seeing servers. But, since it's the internet provided by the apartment I'm not the admin and can't readily change it. Got any suggestions?

If they have a proxy set up (which many shared connections do), then your only real option is to request that they open port 5998 so you can use it.

I do get the issue where no servers show up on the list from time to time, but it only happens when my computer is processing something else that is using alot of system resources. So, if you are running other applications at the same time (including virus scanners), you might want to turn them off or close them and see if that helps.

It did work for the first day or two i had it installed. At first it didnt, then i restarted comp and it did, and it did for a little while 1 - 2 days. Now it wont work, firewall is off and nothing major running in background. Dont think it is a network issue cause 2 other comps see list just find.

Well - I assumed that having my windows firewall off would allow the program to access the port, but it may have not. I found this online http://www.hackernotcracker.com/2006-03/port-opening-and-forwarding-on-windows-xp.html, and manually added everquest to my expectations, and it worked. I'll let you know if it stays working.

Well, i guess maybe I got lucky, cause it worked for one login - then of course i can't see the list again.

OK I MAY HAVE FOUND SOMETHING! Removed EQLSUICONFIG.ini from your EQ directory, and see if it works. I just did that, and I was able to see the server list about 10 times in a row.

I'm having the same problem. Was playing EQ last night with my 2 box, logged off and went to bed, woke up in the morning and BAM blank server select screen.
I am able to log on into the servers but the server list is completely gone.

I'm having the exact same problem. I also tried the solutions offered in this thread so far - none worked for me. I tried to log in directly to my last server, but that also kicked me to the blank login screen. I've occasionally had a blank login screen - I would just log out then back in, and the problem would disappear. However, now I get nothing but blank login screens, several dozen times in a row. I'll try later - I guess it's time to dust of my XBox for a bit.

It may just be a poor connection by the person hosting the login; the person hosting the login server at his home, and it gets congested at night (they may have some sort of cableTV-like connection)- try it out in the morning and see if the results are the same (usually lag is down in the morning).
Usually when it gets slow like that, you can keep trying and eventually you get connected.

I did this - I did not delete the file, but I simply moved it to the desktop so it wasn't in the EQ titanium folder, and I am able to see the server list now. I'll update if it stops working or if moving this file has some sort of impact on the game.

Update.. It stopped working =/ When I take the file out it just gets renewed in the EQ folder. Does anyone else currently have this problem or know of a fix to it? I apologize in advance if the answer is right in front of my face heh.

I had this problem happening to me, no matter what i couldnt get the server list to show up.
Turned out that my cable model was ancient, got it replaced by my ISP for a new one and everything works great.
Not sure if this will fix it for everyone having this issue, but its worth looking into if your modems 9 years old like mine was.

That is not the first time I have seen that resolution for this exact problem. Maybe something is wrong with ISPs and how they handle ports on older modems. I bet they make some change/update and after that point, there are issues with a port needed to get the server list or something. It would also explain why normally when we see 1 post like this, 3-5 more pop up (from other people) within the same day or 2 and then nothing about it again until the next time. It is probably an ISP doing an update that breaks all of the players using that ISP with older modems. Now, if we only knew exactly what the cause was.

You only need to open a port if you're hosting a server, just connecting to one shouldn't need anything special (unless you're behind a somewhat restrictive firewall).

3. us with this problem still cant play the game.

I don't know the exact cause, but so far, everyone that has replaced their modem with a newer one has resolved their problem by doing it. I assume it probably has something to do with ISPs switching to a newer DOCSIS file, which some modems may not be compatible with. It could just be a matter of the DOCSIS incompatibility causing some packet loss, or maybe just certain types of packets to get dropped frequently.

The only thing we know for sure about this is that it is 100% client side. It could be anything from firewall restrictions to packetloss, or even something else that hasn't been considered yet.

Maybe you should check with your ISP to find out what version of DOCSIS they are using and then figure out what version your modem is using. If your modem doesn't support the DOCSIS they are running, they should replace it for free for you. Note that your modem does not have to run the latest DOCSIS to be able to access the internet in most cases, but I am sure there are reasons to have them match up. This is just my theory anyway. Also, some ISPs now support speeds much higher than what modems made even just a few years ago were made to support. So, if you are on a 10mb+ connection, you might need to check your modem stats to make sure it is able to really handle that.

Ok i just had this same problem. logged in and no server lists. soo, i went in to my norton INTERNET security and turned off my fire walls. and WALLA...server lists. but now i just tried to log back in...and nothing. lol :(, we need a resolution. my connection is just fine and what not. i can run EQ on my other laptop just fine (note that it is windows xp), but i can't seem to get it to work on this one (well i can't get the server lists anyway). and i have vista on this laptop. maybe there's something with vista thats causing the servers not being able to be noticed?

my router is a speedstream 4100 and my isp is at&t. to the people that just recently started having this problem, any similarities?

trevius
08-09-2009, 11:24 PM
Finding similarities is probably a good idea for issues like this. You might also want to add what OS everyone having this problem is running. Maybe it is an issue with some Vista security feature.

Also, note that problems like this might happen if you have P2P or Torrent programs running on any of the PCs in your house. If you have any of these types of programs running, try closing them and see if that helps.

OK, I was playing around with this issue and I came up with a very strange solution. I made a copy of my entire EQ directory and created a new shortcut to it. When I tried to log in using that directory I got a timeout error.

THEN... I tried running my original shortcut and suddenly I can see the servers on both machines! I'm now able to log in. Prior to copying the directory I was unable to see the servers on my machines.

Anyone have any idea what that means?

i had the same effect today, but i remembered that i had set up a port forwarding for ventrilo 2 days ago. Removed that from the router configuration and now the server list is back. Strange, that port shouldn't have to do anything with EQ.

Just thought I'd add in my two cents.

I recently moved into a new place with no internet connection, so I've just been borrowing one of my unsecured neighbors'. From here, I've managed to see the server list twice, at random, but at no other times. Upon trying to actually log in to a server it crashed both times.

Using the internet connection at my University I've managed to connect just fine, with no problems. I had to mess with a few settings to get the game itself to work, but the connection was just fine. The same goes for the connection at my dad's house. We're getting our internet set up on Wednesday, and I have complete faith that this will solve all of my problems. The only thing that gets me curious is why could I see the server list those two times?

I'm running 64 bit Vista, but sadly have no idea what the internet connection I'm using is involved with.

I experience this issue infrequently. The most recent was last night. I had three clients running on the same machine. I backed one out to the login screen to log a different account in. The 4th account logged in, but I could not see any servers. I closed the client, opened it again, still no server select. No matter what I tried, I could not see any servers in the server select.

After several attempts, I remembered that you can simply enter your login info and click the "Quick Connect" button which then skipped the server select and logged me right into the server I wanted to play on, which was, fortunately, the last server I had played on. However, I was not able to see the server select screen on any client again until this morning. It happens about 2-3 times a week.

I'm curious. Has anyone tested this on a different login server than the official eqemu one? Since the code for the eqemu login server is not available (unless they switched over to one of the open source versions), who knows what kind of weird bugs might be in there.

It's hard to solve a problem when I can't duplicate it here. Try this;
eqhosts.txt:
change
[LoginServer]
Host=eqemulator.net:5998

to
[LoginServer]
Host=208.64.37.23:5998

If the eq client don't accept that , then go to your windows hosts file and make an entry;
208.64.37.23 eqemulator.net

What this will do is by-pass the DNS server and go straight to the LS, which will save you some MS, you may need.

I've always thought this is due to lag, as I've had this problem a while back when my connection was laggy.

Run your login server then your world.exe

Pay attention to any errors that pass.

When I got this error I discovered that the wrong user/pass was being passed to the login server from world.

I changed the eqemu_config.xml login section to read this:

<loginserver>
<host>192.168.1.149</host>
<port>5998</port>
<account></account>
<password></password>
</loginserver>

and the LoginServer.ini to read this

[LoginConfig]
ServerName=Your Test
ServerDescription=Your Test
ServerMode=PrivateLogin
ServerPort=5998
allowanonservers=1
statsaddress=
statsport=

It worked like a charm

I think this could be my problem also, but that link is for XP, I have been searching for at least an hour on how to open the port on Vista and no luck, anyone know a site that has instructions for vista? or a solution for the no servers on LS screen that could fix it if its not a port issue?

Note: I have had EMU on this comp before, just wiped my computer and re-did everything and am using a fresh install

People that are having trouble seeing the server list, when it does happen, please PM me the following:

The exact time and date, and the loginserver account you used, when you experienced the no server list bug. Include all information about how many attempts.. did it eventually work, etc.

image
09-03-2009, 06:44 PM
Its a bug with the server list displaying properly sometimes (struct is 'wrong' to the client in some way), you can also see high user counts (like 65k), its reproduceable with the Legends client after numerous logins. 'Random' if you will, it seems to happen when the login server is handling numerous requests or is under some sort of load.

I tried to get a packet capture but got too frustrated trying to reproduce, its really random.

Not sure how many of you that got this problem had it happen on wireless connection pc's but for me i had this issue only on my laptop. sometimes i could get in using the last server connect by taking the config file from my desktop and pasting it into the laptop folder,anyway today i solved this issue 100 pct.
I decided to try a ethernet connection instead of the wireless on the laptop and it worked every time 100 percent no issues with about 15-20 sucessful logins tested today.
laptop is Vista 64 bit core duo 4 gig ddr2 9800 gt 512

After reading for several hours and having the same problem i have come to this conclusion. Most have At&t and windows vista. I have been able to log on at the local panera breads wifi and worked fine. This tells me its not anything with my install or laptop. It is the provider or modem. I have ran straight modem and with router on both laptop and computer. I believe it is people with at&t that is having this problem or maybe its just the modem they provide. Reguardless i believe its them since it works fine at the coffee shops wifi.

Finding similarities is probably a good idea for issues like this. You might also want to add what OS everyone having this problem is running. Maybe it is an issue with some Vista security feature.
