Mori

I've come to the eqemu irc channel many times and asked questions. Kathgar in his /sarcasm infinite wisdom /end sarcasm has kicked and banned me every time I ask. I ask you hogie to un ban me and take away ALL of kathgar's powers.

{*edit}
Note: Kathgar's powers have been taken away before.

I would have to agree on this kathgar needs to be a bit nicer.

First of all, I've never had my powers taken away. And second, I only kick/ban the -REALLY- annoying or -REALLY- stupid, sometimes people qualify under both. Oh, and if you taunt me, you are going to get a foot in your ass. You would also notice, that when I kickban people, I take the ban off right away. The only reason I ban is so they don't autojoin back. Also, all of the bans are cleared by chanserv quite often, so stop your whining.

STUPID people huh? Just what makes them stupid? Just because they don't know something that you do? Is that why? I would say lock this thread and I agree with Mori, do something about him, because helpers are here to help, not to ban/kick just because someone is being stupid, which I doubt anyone is, they just don't know the answer and need an answer. Please lock this thread.

Hardy.. from what kathgar has been kick/banning its usually been over something funny..

All the same.. they are pretty stupid.

As for mori.. no clue.

Hardy

Shouldn't kick someone just because they are new and don't know much about the emu yet.....

There is a fine line between new and stupidity.

Please lock this thread.. just more waste of space.

I only kick/ban people that ask questions that are in the readme, or posted on the forums, most of the time as stickies.. Oh, and I'm not a "helper", I'm a coder, that means, well, i'm not there to help you? When people have /real/ problems, I help them.. such as everyone with the wrong loginserver.ini because of lyenu's idiocy. Oh, and if you can't read the documentation and know /nothing/ about computers more than clickyclicky icony, you shoudln't be running a server? EVERYONE and their MOTHER will spend up to a week asking questions that have been answered many time, to set up their own server, and once they have it working 2 things will happen. 1) They decide that running their own server is pointless. 2) They have problems because they want to install the latest (BETA builds, which are label nicely as NO SUPPORT.. and half of the time they want to use Minilogin as well) whenever a new build comes out.

Hey! LoginServer.ini has hostmasks instead of IPs, and Lyenu took the domain away.. and the world server says it cannot resolve the IP of the loginserver.. maybe its because the DNS zonefile only has 1 A record, and its pointing to geocities.

Then why are you banning people for asking "dumb" questions when u don't even have to be answering them. I have asked stuff that was out of the readme for 1 reason, the readme might not explain stuff to well, as long as they read it, I would have no problem helping them. Not all readme's are perfect, not all of them might explain stuff to well either.

Hmm.. My take on it is if youre just going to get pissed about people asking dumb questions in the only publicly available eqemu channel, then you may really want to reconsider hanging out in there... Patience is a virtue, and personally, fostering that kind of crappy attitude is just going to add to the general concenus that the dev's are a*holes that most projects end up getting (this project as well).

I know how frustrating hearing the same questions over and over can be, but a developer that randomly boots people out of the channel for asking questions is not good for the image of the project... Yes, there are alot of questions that are answered in the readme's, but coming from someone who's relied on reference material his entire life, even the most well documented information still doesnt answer every question, especially since not everyone is coming from the educational/experience plateau.

I don't know how long you've been involved with the project Kath, I've been working with the emulator pretty much from the beginning, but I don't think coming in and starting to be the judge, jury and executioner of the IRC channel is doing anyone any good... I value everyone's contributions to the project, whether it be in the development of the emulator, tools, or databases, but I hate to see that kind of holier-than-thou IRC attitude.

Personally, I don't hang out in the channel anymore as I almost never saw any real eqemu related discussions in there, so it really doesnt matter to me. Things may have changed though since I haunted the channel.

My 2 cents though..

Let him do his coding and leave him alone. From my dealings as a short-lived CIS major, I've learned that all too often coders and other people don't get along too well. He's not supposed to be nice to you guys. He's supposed to code. Ignore all this, Kath, and please keep coding.

I agree Trump, if they just help, these kinds of threads would not be created, here is how the conversation could go:

Newbie: HEY GUYS IM NEW TOO TEH EMU CAN I BECUM UBEER!
EQEmu: No, to become uber you need to create your own server, or join someone elses with enough priviliges so you can.
Newbie: How do I create my own server?
EQEmu: Read the readme located at www.blahblah.com, if you have any questions, come back to chat.
Newbie: Thank you

Was that so hard? That is how to stop all threads, like this one, from forming. Some people want to learn, and the only way of learning is to ask questions not just read a damn readme.

I think it's idiotic to kick/ban people for asking questions. If they repeatedly spam or something fine, but the channel is there for stupid questions.

I havn't and don't think I would do what he has, but I sure fel like it sometimes! Perhaps he should lighten up some, and do the following when he does still kick/ban

say: you have been kicked for asking a question answered in the channel topic, or the readme.txt. You may rejoin the channel in 10 seconds. Read the topic for your answer.

kick/ban
wait 10 sec unban

There have been several times I had been about to reply to someones question when I notice they JUST joined the channel, and the answer is probably still on their screen, listed in the topic.
It can be anoying.

Well, I have a solution everyone! Kathgar, go take anger managment courses, yes I know they can be annoying but you should learn to control your inner rage and save it for real nuisances like big purple dinosaurs that try to hug small children and fill their minds with evil lies. The path to becoming good and virtious is long and hard Kathgar, but I have faith in you. You can do it! ^^ As for the people that are actually dumb AKA.. "IM NEW HOW CAN I BECOME UBEER?" Those should be asked kindly to be smarter, and if they continue then kicked and if continually annoy and harass ignored and as the ultimate, banned. NO ONE should be banned for simply asking a question, thats just being a jerk, especially after they've done nothing to you.

It probably don't matter anyway. I have seen him flame ALOT, anything happen to him? Nope, I still see him on the boards. Its pretty pathetic if you ask me. I bet they won't ban him because they need his help, but its still pathetic, I would not want a programmer that runs everyone away from the game. If I was new and asked a question, I get banned for it, I would quit right away. Everyones brain is differant and people learn differant. Maybe someone that asks a question thats in the readme (and they did read it) has a learning disability? Its all possible, be smart about it, answer the question. If you don't like answering questions, then get the hell out. I go through the boards, if I see someone asked something thats in bold letters on the readme, I answer it. No body in this world is perfect. Just get on with life, if you don't like answering questions, don't bother looking at the thread that asks for help. Its that simple
