If you don't have a space in the path, you don't need the quotes. For your example, the following should be how you want to set it in the shortcut:
D:\Everquest\eqgame.exe patchme
You only need quotes if there is a space in the path like this:
"D:\Program Files\Sony\Everquest\eqgame.exe" patchme
still gives me the eqgame has failed blah blah even with no quotation marks and such is there some other way around it
well the quotation marks disappear and no matter what fomat i put the patchme line into it errors out could it be that its windows 64 bit os causing the problems and how ould i fix it short of downgrading back to 32 bit

do i have to change some folder settings or something for xp 64 to work now

If it is crashing like that, the shortcut is probably working just fine, but you have another problem, lol.
Most likely, you need to either mess with your Resolutions for EQ or your Windows Desktop, or you need to change compatibility mode of the shortcut, or maybe other possible multi-core CPU solutions. Check the FAQ in my sig for possible solutions to your problem.

I had this problem once too.... It turned out to be a video problem... Check your eqclient.ini file in your Everquest folder and if WindowedMode=FALSE change it to TRUE and try again. That fixed it for me....
Just for FYI, what make and model of video card are you running?

What is the problem, strife01? You have to explain your issue with as many details as possible if you have a problem you need help with.
