Ive been playing and enjoying EQEMU for about 2 months now and really wanted to create my own for toying around and learning, ive had computer smart friends over and try and help me with the guide, but the guide is old and has wholes that have formed in the last 2 years. wether it be things you had to do that you no longer have to do or old download links that no longer excist

If you want to start your own server I would suggest using either the PEQ setup pack or the axclassic setup. Either one will basicly walk you through the entire setup which is great for any one that is just starting out.
PEQ - http://projecteq.net/downloads.php
AX_CLASSIC Server - http://forums.nahunta.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=574
Additional PEQ stuff - http://projecteq.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=7112&sid=7886c5b837d6e8e5cfdca03ef5497a24

It is possible that the download got corrupted during transfer but the link and the install package do work. I just downloaded and ran it to be sure.
Did you follow all the instructions to set it up properly?
It is very easy to miss this section of information:
IF YOU ARE NEW TO EQEMU PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING!
*THE NEWEST VERSION OF PERL BREAKS EQEMU!* I have confirmed Perl version 5.8.7 works fine, so for best results please use that. See the link below.
Installation instructions:
1. Install EverQuest Titanium.
2. Install Perl
3. Install MySQL (Remember the password you created for the root user, you'll need it later)
4. REBOOT your computer.
5. Run the EQEmu Installer, please be sure to give it the proper location of your EQ client and of MySQL both of which you just installed.
6. Select your options - the default is fine for most people. Minilogin is a local only server, and Public is of course open to the public.
7. When the DOS prompt asks for your root password, give it the one you created above during the MySQL installation.
MySQL version MUST be 5.0. NOT 4.0, 4.1, or 5.1. You can get it here: http://dev.mysql.com/get/Downloads/MySQL-5.0/mysql-5.0.51a-win32.zip/from/http://mirrors.24-7-solutions.net/pub/mysql/
Perl can be found here: http://downloads.activestate.com/ActivePerl/Windows/5.8/ActivePerl-5.8.7.815-MSWin32-x86-211909.msi
Installing both the database and minilogin server type will create a username called mini, password mini that can be used to log into your server. Also, this installer will configure minilogin for localhost ONLY. (Meaning the server and client must be on the same machine.) If you wish to play over a private network, you must make additional changes after the installer completes. Instructions can be found on the EQEmu forums. This does not effect Public at all, provided you do not have a firewall conflict, other people should be able to connect to you without issue.
*Please note that the uninstall program will DESTORY the DATABASE it creates without warning. If you do not wish to lose your database, please back it up or rename it before uninstalling the Server Pack.*
ProjectEQ: http://www.projecteq.net (Database, quests/scripts, this installer.)
EQEmulator http://www.eqemulator.net (Game server, login server for public installs.)
EQEmu version: 0.7.0-1110-peq (virtually all submissions on EQEmu forums, #peqzone, and a few other things we have on Grand Creation)
EQoffline version: 1110-peq
PEQ DB version: 1110a

EqEmu Rev 7.0.3 is working fine with MYSQL Server version: 5.1.31-community MySQL Community Server (GPL) for me. Database peqdb_1129Rev703.
The only hangup was had to get the most recent version of perl 5.8 that I could find. Earlier versions did not work.
