First, let me say I really hate the loading screen artwork in Secrets of Faydwer. It looks like Firiona Vie is trying to pinch a turd or something while holding on to dear life while pirates are having a skirmish behind her. So I decided to do something about it.

I just spend all night making loading screens for my client. How many?

I don't know what the take is on distributing loading screens since it's part of the client, so how's that work? If there's no problems with the guys higher up here, I'll start posting them away. :)

Right now, I'm in need of much sleep. But I don't think it's going to bring back any of my sanity.

I doubt there's any legal problem if they are merely images. SOE have given out their EQ artwork for use on fansites and such in the past, and nobody has ever had problems with distributing screenshots from a game (not including pre-release leaks, of course), so I don't see any chance of an "SOE copyrighted works" issue.

That said, you may be crazy, but I'd say in a... highly motivated sense. :D

When a company distributes a fansite kit which has official artwork, it normally comes with an explicit agreement and sometimes even has conditions for use, like "corporate web site name, address, and copyright should be visible on all pages where creative work is present" so reusing any of their official art work has a very high risk of violating an agreement. End of story, I doubt you'll ever draw the least bit attention even so.

However, screenshots have been ruled as fair use as you are rendering them on your on equipment and the EULA for software drawing your screen has no exclusion for capturing the output in this case. :)

The loading screen you describing comes from Buried Sea

The loading screen for SoF is the one with a mecha-dragon in the center and Firiona eyes looking at you throw the clouds. IMHO best loading screen ever. I am still running T-client, but that is what I have for the loading screen =P

My off-disc install of SoF shows the Buried Sea loading image as well, which struck me as odd. Most likely another SOE "just push what we have to disc and fix it with the patch" situation.

Hmm. Well seeing how it can fall in the UI Mod category, I think it may be fine to distribute them.

Guess I'll post like, handful a day because I'd kill myself if I uploaded all of them, lol. I realized that I didn't leave the borders in, but rather just left the whole image. Meh. Guess that'll be on my "to-do" list.

Some of you might recognize the art, some of you may not. If you want something specific, just let me know.



Directions
1.)Download the loading screen that you want. Then rename the file from loadingscreenXX.jpg to loadingscreen.jpg.

2.) Back up your original file usually found in:
C:\Program Files\Sony\your installation directory\Resources

3.) Copy the new loading screen there, and you should be good to go.



Loading Screens
Don't mind the numbering scheme. This is so it's easier to re-upload or fix one that's broken. So if there's an issue with Batch 01 #3, then it's easier to find and fix.

Might need to turn off "hide extensions for known file types" in folder options. There's should be only two in there: loadscreen.bmp and loadscreen.jpg. The game uses loadscreen.jpg to load the game. :)

Tweaked the login screen a bit more, hehe. :D There was a gap under the logo, so I put something there to test it. Still needs a few fixes here and there, but 'm getting there.

I've already listed them in a previous reply. :) I've added artwork from Warhammer Online, Age of Conan, AION, Kingdom Under Fire II, Rohan Online, Baulder's Gate, World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy: Advent Children, Disciples 3, some random stuff from Hyung Tae Kim (Magna Carta and some random stuff) and some random renders that aren't for any specific game iirc.

Quite so, it would be great to be able to have a credit message such as:

I could do that, but it would take a pretty long time (even with a macro) to stamp all the ones I've done before. I guess I can put a little readme file when I pack them all up or something. I just hit 141 loading screens, and I'm not sure how I'm going to go about doing that, lol.

Ah. Those are in your uifiles folder. You should see a file called EQLS_background_01.tga to EQLS_background_06.tga. Those files are all split up into 6 parts. Just remember to save each of them as a 24-bit Targa file.

Had more time to improve on the new loadscreen template. :) I was able to split up the sections and implement a bit of layering. :D

Even in the gaming industry, you could imagine the horror stories we had to go through just to get one little teeny tiny minor detail fixed just to print something with their name on it - even though they sent it the way they wanted it. Sony has never desired to enforce their artwork unless it is taking away from their subscriber count since it is free advertising. Sony is all about the bottom line at the end of the day so skirt chasing with lawyers does nothing but take away from margins.

Blizzard has always been a company of pride so it's a completely different story with their IP. They actively crawl looking for their productions.

One way to have the loading screen randomly selected when you start the game would be to load with a batch file like the following.

Note 1: You would need to change your EQ shortcut from pointing to "eqgame.exe patchme" to pointing to your new batchfile.

If you're using Vista, though, make sure you're working in a directory you have Write permissions in, or have the batch file set to Run as Administrator, or it won't be able to copy the files around as it needs to.

Feel free. I just threw it together after refreshing my memory on a few DOS commands.

If anyone's concerned about how exactly it works, these are the steps:

1. Verifies that it can see Resources\Loadscreens\load*.jpg

2. Makes sure there's a backup of your original Resources\loadscreen.jpg

3. Runs through the list of files in Resources\Loadscreens to randomly pick one to copy as your loadscreen.

4. Starts EQ and waits for it to finish

5. Restores your original loadscreen from the backup in #2

The way it randomly picks a loadscreen is that it deletes your original loadscreen.jpg file (after having backed it up), then runs through all of the load*.jpg files in Resources\Loadscreen and, for each one, picks a random number from 0-32767 ("%Random%"). If the random number for that particular file is less than 1000 (~1/33 odds), it makes it your loadscreen. If it runs through the whole list of files and none of them ended up getting the 1/33 random chance, it runs through them again until one does.

Pretty simplistic, but it gets the job done. :)

If you are too worried about legalities, you probably shouldn't use them. I don't think you would get sued over them or anything, but you might get a cease and desist order over them. Other game companies that created that art might not be so happy to see "Everquest" (direct competitor for some of them) plastered all over them! Of course, unless your server was getting a ton of attention, it isn't likely anyone with power to do anything to you would ever see them. Pretty low risk over-all, but some risk is there if you are concerned.

I had written this batch code to do something like what Shendare did, though it doesn't restore the original after exit, but it does make a backup of it in the same folder as the batch file. The loadscreens can be in any folder, as can be the batch file. Just edit the section 'EDIT THESE', save and run.

I use it in conjunction with my client launcher (http://eqemulator.net/forums/showthread.php?t=28464) that i wrote, which launches the eq client, and auto-sets the processor affinity to 0, to alleviate any multi-core issues that multi-core procs have.

I really like the Login Screen you've done. Would you post the .TGA files please? I was sick of the Depths of Darkhollow images about 10 seconds after I saw them and until having found this thread had the loading screens off so only had to see the login screen. I now have a sweet looking loading screen and would love a new login screen to match.

With or without 'The Hidden Vale' tag doesn't matter to me, I just like the image and really want to be rid of that ugly DoD image.
