Here's where I am now and then I will list the littany of failure and semi-failure that preceded it as I suspect it is contributing to the current failure.

I have just installed the Steam version of Seeds of Destruction. It is installed in the usual steam directory and I made the modifications to the EQHost file and created the shortcut as instructed. I am using the server designation 5999 per the instructions.

I can get to the server select and select a server but then everything goes black and the program is no longer responding.

Previously I was running on a Secrets of Faydwer client and was successfully playing so I have active characters. This was installed in a separate directory. However, I didn't seem to have all of the zones and I zoned into Highold Pass and went into limbo. It said 'unknown zone' and I am not able to retrieve my character. I uninstalled SOF and reinstalled it several times to no avail. I tested whether the reinstallation had fixed the zone problem by creating new characters and zoning them into HHP but each time they went into 'unknown zone'. So I uninstalled SOF and then purchased SOD from Steam (via the link at the Player Guide). It is installed in a different directory.

So, I am getting to the server select but not beyond that. I don't really know what to try next as I am not very knowledgable about this stuff.

Any suggestions are welcome. I was having fun and miss playing the old EQ!

Unfortunately the HHP & SoF issue there is nothing you can do to resolve(AFAIK). You would have to get your char moved by a GM on that server or use a titanium install to move it yourself.

In regards to SoD client, not sure on that however it could be the server you are trying to log into has not updated their source code or opcodes to be able to accept SoD connections. You should post which server it is.

The server is Project 1999.

Is there a way to update an SOF install to get all the zones?

you probably need some custom files from the Project 1999 people, HighPass was revamped in SOF, and if you do not have the correct map, the client is crashing.
