View Full Version : Magicians crashing after dying

A few of my testers have verified this, as well as myself. Whenever the magicians die, one of two things happen:

1) They die and crash immediately. You can't tell they have crashed but they appear offline to all players. The magician sees a full screen as if nothing has happened, however his screen never updates. If players walk by, mobs walk away, he still sees whatever he saw when he died. The only way to fix is to exit the game by ctrlaltdel or other methods, as quit and camp are unavailable.

2) They die and are able to be rezzed, but that's it. At this point everything from the above applies.

eqemu_error_world, both Isaaru and Shivis are Magicians, no one else throws these errors.

#1 is a desync between the client and server. The result you describe is quite how you know the client has desync'd form the server.

A flood of data from the server to a client like the above errors could easily cause a desync. What rev are you running?

That's a lot of items to sort through..can you verify whether norent items are being used when this happens?

EDIT: That's probably superfluous... You're 'acctid' is changing between 13 and 35. I reckon a guess that the proper 'acctid' for Shivis is neither of the two.

No norent items or attuned items. The only nodrop item equipped is a custom charm (pure stats, no focus/clicky) and epics. The accountids are correct, two separate characters were used in the above example.

This issue is not specific to any specific players, accounts, classes, or races. In any given fight (6 of us) when we all die between 1 and 4 of the characters will experience this issue, and it's completely random which do.

I followed this around a bit and have a few ideas... But, first... Are you running a Linux server?

EDIT: There's something convoluted about what's happening here. There's very few ways to get that warning message. The returned value must be '-1'.
It's almost like you're losing your *item reference between PutItem() and _PutItem().

If you were to add the 'put_slot_id' to the warning message, it should be reporting ''-1.'

I'll dig around some more tonight.

I mispoke above..I meant slot_id reference, not *item. That, or the value is becoming corrupted somehow.

Pretty sure this is the issue and this massive info dump is what's causing the crashes. Just pulled these logs from a fight I did 10-15 minutes ago and the two characters referenced, are the two that crashed.

This shows that something screwy is going on:

Also, all of your 'failures' appear to be in the inventory bag slot range (251 - 330), which means this segment of code in _PutItem is likely culprit:

Not sure what's going on just yet, but if the con check fails, result is never set to slot_id, and returns the default value of -1..which, of course,

Causes? Unsure at the moment... Someone else might have a better guess.

(Are you using non-container containers, or summoned bags? I'm not completely familiar current items, so don't laugh too hard!)

What's your system config? (OS, MySQL, Perl, EMu build parameters, etc...)

The likely cause of those 'Warning: Invalid Slot' messages would be if the parent bag didn't exist in the db query result and it wasn't being put into
the inventory prior to the bag item being processed.

And since you described the players as being offline to other players, it sounds likely that the code that processes character generation on rez/revive
couldn't properly access/process the character information from the database.

I'd be willing to bet that if you went back to older log files, you would see db error messages previous to these with the patches (outside of the
scope found in the logs that you did post.)

Have you been experiencing item loss? Or possibly experience/level losses with characters on this server?

I'll see if I can find what and where to specifically look for those older messages.

EDIT: If you haven't done so, click on your parent source code directory and try reverting that. I will either show files, or not, depending on whether
there is anything to actually revert.

Also, make sure that you right-click the solution name and select 'Clean.' Then try a 'Build' from scratch.

I've already built a clean solution from scratch and brought in fresh binaries. Database is current revision. PC (Win7 Ultimate) has been rebooted several times.

The only issue we have is the crashing, the player appears ONLINE to everyone, including themselves, the only catch is that it (obviously) only happens during death. So you can only appear dead in so many ways. The PLAYER who crashes sees the world as if it's failed to continue updating, like an old school link death but without any end result of physically being disconnected and black screened. No items, experience, or anything else has been lost, ever.

The database issue started after applying the last debugger that uleat posted. Even after reverting it the issue persisted and continues to persist now. Nothing in my database has changed, no passwords, usernames, nothing and access via Navicat, tools, etc remains unhindered.

If my code is at fault, I'll take the blame for it..however, there's nothing in the patches that would cause this behavior.

They use existing variables and only write to log files. Worst case scenario, they would have crashed the server attempting to read from undefined
object properties.

Reverting the files and compiling new binaries should have eliminated any issues the patch code was causing.

I believe this is going to be a persistent database problem. I can't explain why the emu can no longer access the database, but other
programs can.

Given the behavior that your server was already exhibiting, I am really inclined to believe that you were getting database read failures during
the revive process.

It could be server code related, but this is the first occurrence of this happening that I'm aware of and it is highly unlikely that your case
would be the only one if it were.

I don't know if MySQL generates log files, but you might want to check there for issues as well.

I don't have access to my database at the moment, but isn't there a way to run a data integrity check?

Considering ONLY the server is having issues connecting, nothing else is, I wouldn't say it's hardware (ram/hdd/etc), all other software works fine.

Software maybe? But how, that's the question. If it's software it has to be the eqemu software. But the crash remained even after completely wiping out the system minus the database and recompiling and redownloading everything. If it's the database itself, why is it only preventing connections from the eqemu software, and not tools, editors, websites, etc.

Firewall I could see being an issue if the server and database weren't on the same PC. I can connect to the database from external computers just fine.

Server is using root, I use a separate account. However, just to test I set the server to use my separate account and still couldn't connect.

Okay I created a completely new database, sourced in the updates after rev2214 (most recent db). Changed my config file to point to new database, blam server fires right up (minus queryserv, it still can't connect).

Any ideas why queryserv is still erroring out?

How do I merge the customizations from my previous database into the new one?

I've narrowed it down to something inside my database is either corrupted or set to a value that is causing a crash. When using a fresh database everything works, when using an old database everything works, and after merging changes into a fresh database I get a crash.

Going to try sourcing in an older version of my current database. Still not sure what I changed that's causing issues though. Standard item and npc edits is all I've done lately.
