After choosing a server and then goes black

This is my first time trying out EQemu. I chose a server to play on, click play EQ, and then it's black. I waited for a couple of minutes and no loading screen showed up. I searched the FAQ and didn't see an answer for my problem. Sorry if it's a dumb question...

did you follow first time player setup to the letter?
did you try more than 1 server?
start trying to log into PEQ The Grand Creation - its a base server that requires no additional fiddling with client setup.

I followed the setup exactly. Bought Titanium, installed, EQhost file, and so on. Tried more than 1 server, including Grand Creation. According to the FAQ, there are a multiple of reasons if I get an error when it goes black or goes back to the login screen. But it only just shows a black screen, and I have to go to task manager to exit EQ. And I've already checked resolution and disabled firewall. Has anyone else had a problem like this?

Make sure you have the latest DirectX 9 installed. http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35

I've been having the same problem exactly.

Reinstall everquest, or reinstall directX?

I am also getting the black screen. I have reinstalled EQ and tried to use the link for directx, but I have DX11 so it said I have a newer version installed. Neither fix has worked.
