For some reason starting several months ago it has been almost impossible for any computer on my home internet connection (Time Warner T1) to successfully connect to the servers. I have lots of different symptoms.

The server select screen only shows a blank list, no servers. I have to re-login anywhere from 1 - 20 times (sometimes more) before the server list is populated.

When the servers finally show, I will select a server (any server) and click play. *Sometimes* the loading screen will pop up... But the game will almost always hang and freeze before I even get to the character select screen.

*If* I get to the character select screen, more problems occur. Sometimes all my characters are gone and only new characters can be created. Sometimes I get the "Your spell file is outdated" message with more blank characters. On a very rare occasions, I can get all of my characters to show up, but once again there is the fear of a hang and freeze when I select a character and click play.

On an even *rarer* occasion, I can successfully login to my character. however, it seems like I have to stay in a zone as I am plagued by zone crashes and have to start the whole process over again.

As many of you could imagine, this is incredibly frustrating! It first started happening towards the end of last year and progressively got WORSE! We used to be able to work around it, as this was mostly unnoticeable at first.

None of these symptoms are apparent in the least when i try to connect on another internet. i.e. at my girlfriends house on some of the same laptops and computers on her home internet connection (frontiernet DSL). everything is gravy and I can play just fine.

I can't imagine what has happened and there must be a fix. Help!

It sounds like your most likely issue is packet loss. There may be some suggestions in the FAQ in my sig to help. I am guessing you are using wireless connections for the PCs in your house, which often has considerable more packet loss than being hard wired to your router. I would suggest maybe trying to hard-wire your PC/laptop to your router or modem and see if that helps. Other than that, you might try replacing your router and/or modem with a newer model. Some ISPs have changed their DOCSIS to use version 3.0, and if your modem does not support that, it can definitely have issues like that.

Last, you can always try to troubleshoot the issue with your ISP, but good luck with that unless you know networking fairly well and can prove there is an issue with their service. You can try running a continuous ping to eqemulator.org from your command line prompt on your PC and see if you are dropping any packets.

Definitely what Trev said..

You might also want to check out your hardware's model number on the internet.

I discovered that certain hardware, from high-end manufacturers no doubt, have issues with ipv4 to ipv6 conversions.

In my case, I started having packet issues and 100% cpu usage with my wifi nic driver when I switched to a different channel..again an issue with
the hardware.

I highly suspect that alot of packet issues that people are having are the result of their wifi connections, due to hardware bugs.

Trev, an old subordinate of mine in the military actually did just that...

He had traced out his routing and discovered something was awry..and after 2 hours of trying to get a level 3 TWC tech on the phone,
did let them know their dns lookup tables had been compromised.

Haha yeah, I do networking for a living. So, if my ISP connection at home starts having issues and I need to call support, they normally send me straight to their tier2 or tier3 techs. I just talk over the heads of the tier1 techs until they realize they cannot help me :)

"Sir is your computer plugged in and powered on at this time?"
That has got to be my favorite question. I usually respond with -
Nope I hooked the monitor up to my microwave, set it to 60m and turned it on.

Haha! That's a good one :)

Yeah, I don't know which is worse..

The computerized response, or the overseas tech that had never seen a computer before they got this job and are suppose to be the expert...
