Hey all,

Ive always been lurking on and off here from time to time always wanting to start a server, never finding enough time to do so and even now i have to finish a Unity 3D project before i can start on this endeavor.

I was wondering before i set this up if there would be people interested in a progression server with a couple of rules.

-Its a progression server :p that will stay on the same progress until a month has passed since the bosses that needed to be killed, where killed so that new people have some time to catch up, but not in an XP way.
-Everyone and everything will be set to the level of the current expansion, so in essence you don't need to do the xp grind from 1-XX, witch we all have done one too many times, and each and every zone will be valid to play in and to gear up on as all items will reflect the level of the expansion, AA XP however is gained normally.
-Up to 3 accounts per IP, this way we dont exclude family playing together and still allow a mild Tripple Box and 2 boxers could potentially group up to tackle content.
-With all the content put on an even playing field you can go wherever you like to hang out most, with friends or new characters instantly.
-A Divine gearing system will be added where items found as loot or bought donator items can be merged to become more powerful, the donations will be used to rent a server after Alpha/Beta as i have a 120M/Bit at home and will be running the server locally until numbers pick up.
-There will be no level requirements, nor No-trade & Bound Equipment except for the Divine Items, those will be No-Trade.
-The server will also be Merc free, as in no mercs.
-People will be rewarded with Server Loyalty Points to purchase Divine Items, raid mobs would reward those that are there and so on...more about that on a later date.

But most of all, would people like to see a server like this one, ive setup servers in the past to tinker on and its quite a bit of work, so if people tell me now, don't bother, i won't. As for me the server would be an ongoing hobby as i like to program and i like EQ and with all the new MMO's coming out failing hard to be something EQ once has been, idd like to preserve one myself, ive tried out my rose collored glasses before and joined a SOE progression server and boy ...my memory i had of EQ failed me a bit there :p.

So with that said, what are peoples thoughts of what they want? Suggestions are always welcome.

As a final note, i am looking at around end of april to get a server installed locally and get underway with Alpha, if there are enough people interested in it as i said i got a Unity project going and its foundation work is still roughly 3 weeks of work, but i wanted to gauge to check if there would be any interest in it as i would like to build a long lasting server with people on it, opposed to one with a big phat 0 users after a couple of weeks.

People are always looking for something new that catches their attention.

One thing to consider is the reward factor.

The reason EQ is sooo addictive IS the reward factor. If you're not using a level-based system, you will need to ensure that the gear more than compensates.

I don't want to discourage your efforts..but, I don't want to see you fail either. You will really need to focus on the gear in order to make it worth giving up level attainment.

I'm sure some other people will have opinions on this as well :)

I am in the same boat as you are. I started working on a server to emulate WoW but in the end it was too much of a burden to start zones from scratch in addition to making too many client modifications that I was told may lead to a C&D letter from SOE. So I've teamed up with another board member and I'm working on a progression server idea now. It's the World of WarQuest server on the list that I will change as soon as they fix the WS modification link here.

I say your idea of a server is good and you should do it regardless of what people here think. Most of the fun of running a server is being able to do the coding for personal satisfaction.

Thats true, the leveling part would still be all the AAXP you can get, that still amounts to a whole lot of xp to get and like you said the server would be entirely based on gearing up or i could combine both and set players at level 50 and let them get xp from there on in seeing the base classic EQ is level 50 and then add 10 to get with Kunark and so on.

Well see what people want most who post in this thread and go with a combination of both.

Good input, i appreciate that.

Edit: I see you came from Bertox aswell, do you remember the Guilds Red Sky or Phantom Raiders by any chance, as in we might have crossed paths once ?

Damn, just hearing about that and it sounds like a whole lot of work, but does SOE really send S&D letters to people with emulator servers?

I would really like to see people enjoy the server first and foremost as its allot of work and time, so while there are people on it, i dont mind spending the time as i GM every 2 weeks a pen and paper RPG aswell and i really like to tell stories, the same would go for the server.

Funny you should mention PR...

I was a 3rd string raider there for awhile..not sure what happened, but our cadre wound up leaving... Uleat was my dark elf enchanter.

(I seem to remember a monk being the guild leader..can't remember his name though.)

I played on live from about March 2000 to June 2002. I mostly grouped with some guys from work - Lumiden/Nedimul, Thaycure (, can't remember his wife's character...)

I was there when the main guild enchanter made the final four in best of the best and she (he?) got like 2nd or 3rd place.

Oh lol this is funny, yeah that monk would be Raak, what a small world we have here, i guess i quit before Raak passed the torch to the second and then the third so we never really met, i started EQ on day 1 it came out, moved over from UO from the Catskills server and moved to EQ2 with a Neocron pitstop inbetween.

Its good meeting PR people, even if they are from a different generation :)

If i had known what i know now about MMO's i would have never left EQ1, i ended up in EQ2 for 3-4 years aswell in the Raid Guild The Forgotten, just throwing it out there just incase :p

Nice to meet you :)

If i had known what i know now about MMO's...

good 'ol hindsight. I remember getting burned out quite a few times in EQ as well, but always ended up coming back. Alas, the new generation has different tastes and I seriously doubt any MMO will resemble what EQ was at its peak.
