It has been a year since the last, and final, round of beta testing for Sanctuary in the Sky. Players became very involved in the server and provided an incredible amount of detailed and passionate feedback -- then the server vanished, without a trace, as it did the year before.

A full reboot of the Sanctuary server has been in the works now, with the design stages of this new reboot overlapping with the last few months of beta testing -- this has been a plan for almost a year now. The design documents are strong, and there is a set plan in motion now to bring this beloved - and controversial - server back.

The Reboot

This is not the same Sanctuary that you played before. Some things were carried over into the new design, but most things have been entirely reimagined. The world as you knew it is no more - There IS no "Sanctuary in the Sky" anymore. The progression is different, the items are different - this is a whole new game, using concepts and systems from the original.

Choices

Players start on a tropical island, unable to recall where they came from or how they got there. A tribe of island Iksar offers to take them in, under the condition that they work to better the life of the tribe as a whole. This is where player choice begins, and these concepts carry through the whole of the game. The players may choose to accept these conditions and work for the tribe -- or they can stray from the beaten path, and take what they can from the Iksar before moving on to other things. Choices and factions play a large role in this world, and the players will be faced with many difficult decisions -- decisions that will affect other areas of the game for them.

Survival

Starting with nothing but a few scraps of food and drink, players must immediately struggle to survive on the remote island. Without a weapon, players must craft their own survival tools using the resources around them.

Tradeskills and Professions

There is a strong emphasis on tradeskills here. A player may choose to master them all, or specialize in one or two professions. Player crafted items are VITAL to the economy and the survival of all players. There are of course item drops from mobs, but it will always be necessary to buy and sell crafted items with other players -- or make them yourself!

Multiclassing

Starting at level 20, players may begin collecting the skills and equipment necessary to start customizing their class. A monk, for example, may become a White Monk, capable of healing and buffing himself and allies. A Wizard could specialize as a Blue Wizard, manipulating the mana flow of both friend and foe. These secondary classes are not exclusive - there will be the ability to switch between any that have been collected, situationally as the player sees fit.

Rich Storytelling

With a background in the entertainment industry, server administrator Zerjz has woven a truly memorable tale, full of locations and characters you won't soon forget. There is an overall "artsy" feeling to the world, evoking suspense, intrigue, horror, mystery, and humor. Flavor is in abundance, and the lore has been thought out in complex detail.

+ 100% custom content - no item or zone is like its classic EverQuest counterpart, everything has been reworked from the ground up to give players a sense of the unknown, mystery and intrigue.
+ Level 50 cap for the base game, with future expansions planned.
+ Dangerous and complex world - players will need to band together and form alliances as they set out to rediscover the lost world and find their place among the new pantheon of heroes
+ Professional customer service - You will never see a developer goofing off, spawning things for players or jabbering in OOC. GM powers are used very sparingly and only when necessary to provide support to the players
+ Dynamic world role playing events with a unique approach to player interaction and storytelling
+ Consistent level of quality
+ Balanced gameplay - Everything in our world has its place and a purpose. Player feedback is constantly being monitored to ensure that bugs are fixed quickly and to ensure that balance remains throughout all aspects of the game
+ Immersion - Items will never be ridiculous or overpowered, and there won't be silly things like buff NPCs and port NPCs - I believe that the game can be balanced to be played with a much smaller playerbase in ways that are much better than has been implemented by a lot of servers I've seen on eqemu. You do not have to be constantly reminded that you're playing a player-made emulator server - a level of immersion can be possible even on an emulated server.



This new server is preparing for Closed Beta testing - A short closed beta to ensure these new systems are fully functional before opening the server to the public. This closed beta is expected to last for 2-3 weeks before open beta begins officially.

Tried to log in a few times. First time I managed to create a character but wound up in Crescent Ridge, which doesn't seem to be part of the Plan, heh. Since then I've tried a few more times and can't log in at all. Client just does the black screen boogie and eventually resets to server select.

Closed Beta has not officially started yet until we are on our proper hosting. I've got the server open and unlocked this weekend for some initial pre-beta testing, but connection may be intermittent for some players. It's been hit or miss so far with our current hosting (my home network) -- This will be stabilized once we enter into closed beta proper.

Some players have been able to connect and play, others haven't, or have to try logging in multiple times before they are successful.

Logging in is going to be hit or miss until we get on our permanent hosting and beta officially starts. It's open to the public right now if they want to go through the trouble of connecting to the server, but you'll get disconnected every time you zone or die. There is content to be played with right now though, if it's worth the headache

Adventurer

I'm going to let the players start a wiki if they choose to - I do not intend to make all the information about the gameplay readily available. There should be a large element of unknown, exploration, experimentation, discovery, trial and error and I feel that having a server-run wiki trivializes those aspects of the game.

Enchanter

Enchanters are masters of the material world, augmenting and altering objects as they see fit. With a wave of the hand, they can curse and uncurse items, supercharge their allies, and severely weaken their opponents. Enchanters are also able to communicate with the supernatural realm, calling forth a friendly magical wisp to aid them on their travels. Many Enchanters choose to specialize in the art of jewelcrafting, as precious gems are particularly conducive to their enchantment magics.

Alchemist

Alchemists are primarily interested in the conversion and transference of one material to another - at a cost. They can also create poisons, able to be applied to weapons, food, drink, and used directly on the target of the poisoning. trubles: I disagree. this server was actually pretty rough if oyu were lazy or tried to bot it. if he follows the same path.. it will be tuned for ~1 group and will be rather rough if you are bad at eq

i wasted a good manyhours playing on it like an addict

A Guide to Beial Island
Part 1: Starting out.

First person you are going to meet is “a concerned island Iksar”. Your first step on this island should be to hail her. She will give you all the skills your class needs at level 1. Also your level 1 through 9 spells.

If you open your inventory, you will notice that you are completely naked. No weapons no gear. If you are interested in the lore, at this point, you have been told that you washed up on this island with nothing on you. If you look around, you will see wolves and rats running around all over the place.

The first thing you should do is kill these wolves and rats. The wolves will actually drop your first weapon. “Sharp Fang”. As you continue to quest, you may have noticed random things dropping from the rats and wolves. As a first time adventurer, I want to draw your focus to 3 of these items.

+ Dirty Flesh
Used in making leather armor, this will be the best you can get for protection at your first few levels. (See the leather guide on the wiki for recipes.)

+ Torn Cloth
Used in making cloth armor, for those that can’t wear leather, this will be your way to go for gear. (See the cloth guide on the wiki for recipes.)

+ Rimeweed
While this is primarily used by Alchemists for potions, this is also crucial to creating yourself on this island. This is how you will make your money here. At 37 Charisma just one of these sells for 5g. A stack for 10p. This will be huge for purchasing bags and other merchandise from the merchants other players have made.

You will want to kill these rats and wolves until you are level 3. There are alternate routes to leveling for different classes, however this is the basic way to go. At level 3, you will want to head towards the rear part of the island. There is a large hut there, inside the hut you will find a ladder, on top of there are a pile of spiders. You will want to kill these spiders until you are at least level 5. These are great xp and easy to kill.

Now that you are level 5, you are halfway through getting off the island.

A lot of people have been reading the first post (which I cannot edit - mods?) and thinking this is still a Titanium-only server. This is not the case anymore. All players will need an Underfoot or higher client for Sanctuary now.

Update on the state of Sanctuary

We have increased our number of developers, fixed 100% of the crashing bugs that plagued our alpha period, and are in the process of revamping our starting zone, Beial Island, to lower the learning curve for tradeskills and to give the players some more things to do on the island (in addition to doubling the experience gain rate for the island)

Lots of new things to see and do, an easier way to download our custom files, and an entirely stable server - if you checked out the server during alpha, and were put off by the bugs and crashing, give it another go! You're guaranteed to have a much more pleasant experience now.

+ The ability to mine ores, gems, and other materials from the ground has been added! This is a robust system allowing players to discover rich veins of ore throughout the world. Equip your Explorer's Mining Pick and get to digging!
+ The Explorer's Mining Pick can be purchased from Miner Bengar in the New Nexus. Simply equip the pick, find a vein, and right click on the pick to begin mining. Veins will get tapped out eventually, and will replenish themselves after a period of time.
+ The ability to refine ores and smelt them into ingots has been added
+ A new tradeskill container, the Heavy Smelter has been added to merchants in Beial Island, New Nexus, and Xuolia. This will allow the use of the Blacksmithing tradeskill without needing to use a world forge.
+ New weather effects have been added to our Time and Weather Effects system
+ Snowfall increases the damage of cold and ice based spells by 3%
+ Rainfall decreases the damage of heat and fire based spells by 3%

I must admit, that is a pretty sweet server effect. Can say without a doubt it's the first time I've heard of anyone implementing something like this. Keep up the good work.

Starting Saturday, November 29, the server will be undergoing an extensive redesign of the new player experience and starting area. This will be a complete overhaul of Beial Island and will add a very cool introductory segment to the game. This is being done to improve the gaming experience of all new players coming into the game and will add an element of immersion and suspense that has, to our knowledge, never been done before in any MMO. We have recently brought on several new team members to work on this and other projects, and have assembled what I personally consider to be a development "Dream Team" including a combination of coders, world builders, writers, and customer service representatives. We apologize for the extended downtime, expected to last up to one week, but we are confident that these new additions to our game will create lasting and memorable gaming moments for all players, new and old.

Just going to say this: Anyone who shuts down their server for revamps for this reason is actually pretty awesome and dedicated. I'd rather play through a good server that is polished instead of a mediocre server with no heart put into it.
