I'm planning on starting the process of building a clean persistent EQEMU server in the next week or so. I'm quite excited about it. When reading the steps for the client however, STEP 2 says that they need to register on the forums? But why? Is this a requirement to play on a server I'm hosting?

If you're planning to use the the EQEmu log in server, yes. If you're running your own log in server, then you will need to add accounts there.
