As you all know the live servers are being patched today. We already know that patching your client will result in a temporary loss of functionality on EQEmu servers.
Please take precaution to backup the necessary files, we will not be distributing them.

What are the necessary files? Is there a way to tell which are necessary and which are not?

don't patch your eq installation if you want to be safe. You could back up all the files, that works too.
If you don't play EQlive, then just don't patch and you should be fine.

My guess would be to backup eqgame.exe and eqmain.dll. Those are the ones that I always had to keep a backup of when I was using HQ. More than likely, EQEMu is the same way.

IMHO, the best way to use the EMU is to copy your EQ directory to another (call it EMU) and just run eqw out of that directory instead of out of your "live" folder. This way you can have both with just 2 icons on your desktop without having to switch files (or even run both at the same time if you are so inclined).
This is how I do it and i never have problems with having to back things up:)

I maintain several backups just in case I encounter a major problem and want to perform some regression testing, such as a pre-SoL version for EQEMU 0.1.9 and earlier. It's cheap insurance.

I am in the same category as WC.
I have in zip files: SoL and nonSoL client side files.
Then I have my normalEQLive directory that is always patched to the lastest and my EQEmu client directory that is rarely patched unless absolutely necessary.
On the EQEmu server side I keep 0.9.0 and at least three version of 0.2.x in unzipped form.
Just making a copy of your EQ dir works fine... Just using separate EQ's to run emu/real game.

Quag updated Gotfrags with working code for the current live client. If you've patched you can currently login there.

I just made a character (called Windcatcher of course :) ) and tried to zone to the GotFrags server with an unpatched client with no success. I'm backing up my EQ folder and will try patching it. I'm curious to see what the fruits of everyone's labor has been :)

It's ok. I backed up my EQ folder before patching. I can always roll it back. Thanks for the heads-up though. It means that indeed I'll have to roll it back when I go back to working on zone files since I need to switch between several applications while the client is running.

If the code for gotfrags is working(havent tryed) can you release the fixed file?
Also until a new verson of EQW is working i THINK it is possible to keep the old DX8 eq .dll and play on any server if you are using an up to date client(once that is fixed). Just thought of it and I cant test it here at school, will try it at home at gotrfrags since they are running the live verson, but i will use my old DX8 file instead.
If someone can test this before me, please post if it is workable or not.

ZeroDegrez: I tried it :(
All it did was give me an error about the dx8.dll when i tried to run everquest.

I tried that also without luck, so I'm stuck. But I'm with ZeroDegrez...if the code fix is online on GotFrags, why not go on and release it? I tried to just mess around on GotFrags, but I lag heavily on it for some reason. And it's not the same as running your OWN server. Until the next release, which I hope is soon, I'm stuck. By the way, is the GotFrags server running a linux or windows version? Just curious. ;)

Had a technical question to ask regarding this: what actually changes in the client that prevents connection to a current EQEmu server? Is it as simple as the client sending its version number, and it not agreeing with what the server expects, or are there actual changes in the communication protocol that mess things up?

The reason they havent released it yet is that a certain amount of testing is necessary to ensure they quell all the issues they are trying to fix. If they dont do that, they release something thats not had any QA (Quality Assurance) time, and theres a problem with it, then the boards are flooded with 'Im disconnecting after 2 minutes!!' and other such communications related to releasing a product before it's ready (just read into the historys of Daggerfall and Pool of Radinace 2)
Be patient, it will come when they think it's ready, I dont think ANYONE can complain at the pace these guys set for releasing new versions/patches. They are EXTREMELY fast.
Also, Im pretty darn sure GetFrags is Windows, since the Linux version has just started compiling correctly recently with alot of help from MisAnthrope , Quag, and Sin. (There were mutex problems for a few releases)

*nod* QA is top priority over release dates (although i am quite confedent a fix for 0.2.3 will be out soon)..

*nod* I understand. Sorry, I was just frustrated at myself for making such a stupid mistake. I agree. I don't want to be running something that has not been fully tested.
