Flavor of Linux

Does anyone have a preference for flavor of linux to run the emulator?

On our Wiki currently, we have guides for 3 Linux distros:

I assume these are the most commonly used distros.

I don't use Linux myself, that's why I directed you to the guides themselves rather than attempting to explain my own preferred distro. Although, I would probably use one of those three, like Debian 7 over Debian 6 and definitely not Fedora 20 because I only like Flatbill 20 for my OS. (That of course was a crappy joke about OS...)

Ice creams are almost all built on cream, sugar and cold, and Linux distros are all built on Linus' kernel and the GNU tools. Debian and Fedora (more accurately, Red Hat) are both older, solid distros, and most (not all, but rather most) speciality and beginners' distros are forks or derivations of one of those two. With an everyman's working knowledge of your favorite distro that uses the .deb or .rpm package format, you should be able to adapt one guide or the other to your distro of choice.

If you're not a Linux user and just looking for the advantages of Linux inside a VM, stick to the guides to the letter. Fedora and Debian mainly come down to personal preferences; you won't find great advantages or disadvantages in either against the other.

If you pound on it viciously enough, Debian can be transformed into a pretty sweet desktop. That said, for server duty Debian is about as good as it gets!

Ubuntu server here (which is essentially Debian.) Doesn't matter all that much if you're starting from scratch, Ubuntu/Debian is fairly different than CentOS (which is a free version of RedHat) -- Mg

I use Xubuntu (Ubuntu with Xfce instead of Gnome or KDE). I run it mainly headless and only use X for VNC.
