Changing NPC levels in-game

OK. I should know this, but is there anyway to change an existing NPCs level in game and save it without creating a duplicate? Converting an already populated zone and wanting NPC levels to increase as players move through it.

Target NPC. #npcedit level 20 (or whatever). Will reflect it after the next repop.
