Updating / maintaining a server

Hi guys, got my server up and running.. customized a few npcs/server rules..
Question is:
1) would you suggest keeping up with all updates done by the team?
2) if yes, what's the easiest way to do this while keeping my rulesets/characters in place? is there a utility or something?
