Hey everyone. Ive played Peq for a few years but am interested in hosting my own server for a few friends to play on privately. I have looked at the wiki and want to use the installer, but my main question is what is the minimum machine needed? Id like to find something cheap or refurbished and would expect a load of about 50-100 at any time usually playing together.

Minimum CPU?
Ram?
Hard drive?

Anything else I should know from a hardware perspective.

Thank you so much in advance.

Really about anything will run it for a small group of people.

What you need to look at is your os choice.

For windows, the minimum visual studio requirement is 2012 - which requires windows 7 to compile. (It can be targeted for older os's..but, don't ask me how to do that :P )

Linux, I have no idea... Someone with that expertise will need to chime in.

EDIT: If the group is small enough, you can probably host/play on the same machine.

It will probably be 3-5 people that all box 10-20 toons. So few people but a bunch of accounts.

Going to be 64 bit windows (7,8, or 10). Just curious about ram and cup needs.

Thanks

You don't need much it's just text being transferred. I would say if you have an I5 or better that's plenty, run about 30 zones. Raid Addicts has a dual Xeon with Raid 10 which is overkill even with our peak 100ish characters on.

Lol. It's just text being transferred. Oh Mort...

Just for perspective, Im running my server with a amd athlon tf-20 1.6ghz single core 4 gb of ram and and older than dirt 5400 rpm hdd in a laptop. Been running for 5 years straight with 50 zones loaded, had about 65 people logged in at one point on it. Yeah pretty sure a hamster on a wheel could run a server. Laptop is a great idea btw for small population because of power failures your server wont crash.

Edit "Forgot to mention im running windows 7 ultimate, easier to setup using windows in my opinion. I did have a server setup for linux but it was more of a pain in the long run for me and performance was about the same.
