View Full Version : EQEMu Servers need your help!

Well, it appears one of our main servers is starting to be on its last legs...

He is a k6-2/300 with 256megs edo memory running on an old 6gig fujitsu ide drive. This system happens to be the first system I built myself back when I got my first domain back in January of '98.

The system has been crashing lately as you have seen (it just happens to be the only active and working login server at the moment), but more importantly, it holds over 4 months of data to do with our source tree since around the end of July.

Currently, we are processing over 1000 login requests an hour on that machine, it is really the backbone of the whole EQEMu.net project.

Telmet has already said he is sending a new cpu and motherboard to help offset the costs, but I do not have the money for what the rest of the machine needs honestly.

What I am asking of you guys is simple. I need a case like from:
http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll?cgiurl=http%3A%2F%2Fcgi.ebay.com%2Fws%2 F&krd=1&from=R8&MfcISAPICommand=GetResult&ht=1&Sor tProperty=MetaEndSort&query=rackmount+atx+case

a 4U rackmount case (for 19" racks). So it will fit in The EQEMu.Net Rack (http://www.cyberjunky.net/backup/rack.jpg)

Please, only 1 person help buying one. It just needs to be ATX and 4U.

Also, money donations for the new RAID (Mirrored 40GB/8MB cache WD ATA drives) would be a great help. The drives are about $90/each and the raid controller (Promise FasTrack) is about $90 with a cache sdram installed.

If you would like to donate anything from the above, post here, and also come to #eqemu on irc.eqemu.net . I try to chat as much as possible, but this is the time I need overtime, so I might not be there 24/7. I will get you my address if you are serious. If you want to donate via paypal, dev@eqemu.net is the account. You will get a nifty Support icon for it!:)

Hopefully, we can get these donations done quickly and this new machine up as soon as possible.

FYI, just for some project donation stats in the last year:

1) vBulletin License (Owned) -> Pyrotek (Back in Janurary of last year).
2) $1.01 (paypal) -> Total from Baron-Sprite & devn00b
3) No Hardware (has arrived yet).

Now, the project costs about $190/month to keep running for everyone, and I have been doing this bill since around April of '01.

Well, I'll let you go on and play now.

if you can send me a email message at hilljr@kitty-hawk.navy.mil ill see what i can do. It would help to know exactly what you need hardware wise or is there an paypal account i can send some money to.

I appreciate all you guys do on making a local server since me and my friends on the boat are out to sea alot and cant really play eq normally. This has been alot of help and fun for us since some of us is trying to learn how to program.

Again thanks.

Well, I have a little problem about paypal. I donthave a credit card, and I dont have a bank account, so they will not let me accept money. As soon as my checks are cashed, they go to bills, I am sure you guys know how that goes (expecially when you work 6 or 7 days a week).

If you would like to pay by money order still, you may contact me in irc.

I don't have it right now to send.

I did want to let you all know that I'm not afraid to speak up even if I'm shit broke....(un-employed wife and 2 kids to feed on 28K a year).

If I had any extra money or any useful parts I'd send'm.

I'm posting this cause I want ya'll to know soon as I can I'll send some, hopefully it won't be too late.

Thanks for understanding.

I understand not everybody is able to donate because of the way the economy is. Look at me, I have a wife, and a kid (with another on the way), and I am making less than you:\ It is rough for the IT industry right now, but we are hanging on (by oddjobs I take).

So far we have about $215 in donations + hardware.

Also, if you have ever thought about it, if only 300 people donated $1 a month to the project, I would not be spending the money I could use for hardware upkeep. With over 10,000 people using the login server, I think that is fair to ask, but that is a rant I really dont want to get into. We are almost to where we can get the new server now as it is, so we are doing good (expecially after only about 12 hours of the donations being open).

I also added the donate link to the frontpage so people can see it.

I under stand compleatly about the IT industry. I have been out of work for a year. yea companies want my services but they don't want to pay for it. fortanly I have no kids but my income is less than 7K a year at this time and it is slim pickings for 2 people. I do have hard ware but no way of sending it.

I have cases (no rack mounts but many tower style) and verious other pieces. the prices were I live setting up a server is kinda cheep. I can buy a hardly ever used PII 400 fully loaded with the standerd hard ware (even with 3Dcards) for around $250 (ie 10 of them for $2500) and new atx tower cases go for under $50

so if I can figure how to pay for shipping I could possably help.

I thought this site was a god send becouse I allways wanted to play eq but never could aford it and saddens me that times are tuff like this.

but at this current time I can only give moral support. :(

I sure wish I could help, I have been with you guys for a long time now. If I run into anything (ie hardware) I will sure send it to ya. I don't currently have a job, so money is out of the question  I will check in the basement, maybe I got some stuff there I can send ya (who knows whats in my basement, lol). Seems the donations are doing very well now, great job!

Tell me about hard times in IT. I got laid off from Cisco Systems in April 2001. I'm STILL looking for work. And I have gotten over the (once upon a time ago) ridiculous concept of taking a job that pays less than 1/2 of what I was making. Nothing quite like being downwardly mobile. Now if I could only get an INTERVIEW on one of those jobs!

And what was once a comfortable retirement portfolio - well, it's worth less than $400. Than you Bernie Ebbers, you rotten scum bag - may you burn in hell for all eternity! (Former CEO of Worldcom for those who were wondering.)

But even though times are tight, for now, I am lucky enough to still be drawing unemployment. So, I have made a small contribution. I hate to equate making a donation for operating expenses to paying for EQ live, lest it raise an eyebrow or two at Sony, but EQEMU is a bargain at any amount.

Much has been posted about how wonderful the Dev's are to keep the project going. And they are, I stand in awe and wonder at the coding skills, since I have none. But let's not forget there are other parts which make projects FUNCTION. And one of those is Cash.

Thank you for all you have done, Hogie.

The problem in IT is a matter of expectations.. Salaries went through the roof in the late 90's with the dotcom bust, and every compsci grad on the planet EXPECTED 60k or more a year on graduation. All these little dotcom companies brimming with venture capital sucked up all the people could, got them use to a higher lifestyle, then collapsed leaving them with a lexus payment and 300k house to pay for with have the salary expectation. I was really lucky in that I picked well as far as where to go, but I saw it happen to alot of people. (I am in no way comparing Cisco to a dotcom btw).

My funds portfolio still looks really strong, but I invested in mutual funds rather than specific stocks so I took alot less of a hit, even on my aggressive portfolios. The biggest hit I took was Lucent (22.00 when I bought, floating around 1.50 right now).

It is a hard time, thats for sure. Daily I'm thankful that my company hasnt laid off anyone, and plans to make sure it doesnt happen, and that kind of employee loyalty goes a long way. I left IBM for exactly that reason, theyre 1st reponse to any market situation was to shed resources...

Good luck though, and Im donating my part too, giving up a Promise RAID controller and a bit of cash to help Hogie out. Its been a tough time for everyone.

I wish I was old enough to have a savings. I have already lost a car, and Im kinda back on my feet, but with a $1700 transmission which is pulling $250 out of my checks now before I even cash them, Im kinda struggling. We will get through it. I am going to update the donation list now, as we got 2 donations today since I left for work

The thing I like, when I get out of college, all computer science jobs will expect prior experience, can't get job experience if you cant get a job, can ya?

DeletedUser
12-18-2002, 07:37 AM
Sure you can, you just can't start out at $60k/yr right out of college, you have to be the Network Gopher Boy (tm) for a while first:)

Nivisec
12-18-2002, 07:41 AM
Working on a project like EQEmu is prior experience :) Make a portfolio before that job interview with samples of what you've done.

I'm still in college myself, but that's what I do when I need some cash to eat or pay rent (college is fun on that respect) and want a small project job, even if they say they want experience working so and so years.

I graduate this coming semester with my CS degree, but going to stay in college and get a master's or two.

----
On a side note, I'm not extremely involved, but I love the project and wish I had time to be involved with the programming side. I wish I could help you guys but like everyone else I struggle along too for now :( Scholarships are expiring, loans building up, and all that fun stuff. Perhaps in another 6 months when I start my master's program I can join in the fun in development :)

Ah, but you dont understand. It isn't for a "world" server, it is for the backbone of the project. When you login to eqlogin*.eqemu.net , you are hitting this machine. Also all our development versions are on this machine, not anywhere else

EQEMu Developers should be paid for the hard work they do. But here they are asking.. not even requiring a few dollars to make sure this project doesn't die.. so YOU, yes YOU can play and use it.

I don't see why people can't send a few dollars in.. thats just sad.
Plus.. when you do it, you get a COOL support forum icon. :P

I'll send some money in as soon as I get paypal setup.

We only got it once, which is great! Thank you.

Btw, If your email address on paypal does not match the email address on here, it will not automatically update your account, so send me an email and let me know who you are. I try to update them as soon as possible when I find the error, otherwise I do not know who to mark it too (http://www.eqemu.net/?donations is created dynamically from paypal).

Btw, I wanted to let you know the status of the money.

I had to spend a lot of it to keep the site up because money that was suppose to come in for bills didn't. I used $450 to pay for 2.5 Months of internet (To Speakeasy if anybody is wondering).

Then $12.95 for a month of use on an EQLive account so I could get horses. I then bought PP (since nobody would supply me with any heh) to get horses for $44.99. Finally, I got that porn site off our name by paying $50 for eqemu.com (gives us 2 years + transfer). That leaves us with $147.67 in the account, and no hardware bought yet.

If we can get another $800 before January 31st, I believe we can get 2 good servers built out of it, and have virtually no more downtime at all. concerning Login Services.

01-10-2003, 03:00 AM
What is your current Expected hardware that you WANT to buy?? And what state/country do you live in. I may have some equipment (new) that i might be able to donate. What pieces do you need, please list what kind of

Case AT/ATX and type MiniTower/Tower/Rackmount
Motherboard (please specify FSB/Memmory/Type of Processor and stats)
CPU What brand name do you trust? And what speed would you like
Hard Drives (if RAID please list a RAID board with motherboard or a RAID Card)
Hardware Accessories (Keyboard, Mouse, Firewire etc etc what you need)

Also as far as the paying for the EQ account, get with me on email system and i can let you use my account. I only keep it to collect packets anyways. I am working on getting one of my High level EQLive player friends to start working on this project. So should have some more Packets collected from many of the planes.

Just FMI tell me what it is you are expecting to purchase and ill see what i can do.

I thought I laid it out pretty well in the first post. 2 P2 or higher machines (atleast 500's) with 256megs+ ram and mirrored WD 40gig Special Edition (8meg cache) 7200rpm ata/100 drives with promise raid controllers or maybe highpoint raidrocket 133's. These can fit in 4U or 2U (which I found for $82/each and will be usable for us). The graphics cards just need to be PCI with 16megs ram so they dont slow down the system bus. I'd love to have athlon 1ghz processors.

As for where Im at, Im in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex in Texas.

I just ordered a case + power supply. They were $85 for the case, $15 for a 300w power suppy, and $17.08 for shipping adding up to $117.08 grand total. This is the cheapest I found online by $5 (not via the link above, via mpcparts.com). I called in the order today, they said they would be shipped out Monday latest. Hopefully some more parts will come in by then.

Actually, no they dont sit on an oc256 backbone. They just have 6gbps of traffic coming in (more on the way by July 1st they will be at 11gbps from 5 different uplinks). We actually have our webserver on a rackshack machine.

The problem is development. Our Development server environment is run under oracle and windows 2000. The login servers are run under windows 2000. That is our main problem. When you can get me raid on a windows 2000 machine with someone there to reboot it when we need it (and if we are moving to 1 box, we will need atleast 2gb ram), then please tell me where I can cheap!

Yes, I know the wiring needs to be redone, but that can wait until I move.

Which btw, we will be moving soon!:)

Our servers will be located in a NOC I run in Michigan (well, some of them), and the rest at home on my dual Speakeasy accounts:)
