Ok, a new Packet Collector is not likely, but that doesn't matter. I need you guys out there to packet collect EVERYTHING you can with the current Packet Collector and then be super descriptive about what you were doing. The packets need to be decrypted and be posted with lots of details.

Things to start on would be:

Zoning
Items
Spells

but anything else is welcome.

Obviously we need capture from the NEW client.

I know this is a idoit NEWB question, but what packet sniffer is good to use? Then how do you decode the zlib packets.

You dont decode them, The Devs do, and then pass the data on to the person that knows whats to do with it. They have a decoder for the packets. You can click on the link and intstall it.

Packet Collector (http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/eqemu/PacketCollector-0.7.4.zip?download)

You will also need Winpcap

Winpcap 2.3 (http://www.mirrors.wiretapped.net/security/packet-capture/winpcap/WPcapSrc_2_3.zip)

I have always wondered if a packet sniffer can get you banned.... I have access to the 1st and 2nd teir zones in PoP.... but I am afraid I would put my account at risk please tell me if I am wrong : /

Youre wrong..

The only way if you'd be banned is if you announced to the zone .

To be honest. How can anyone ban you for monitoring traffic on YOUR OWN network for 'auditing' purposes. Most ISPs capture packets to debug problems on the network... So are you saying that people on those ISPs should be banned.

Don't be silly!

On top of that... You are allowed to reverse engineer under the DMCA. So yada.

(Not that the DMCA affects me in this country)
