You all might want to take a look at this... there has to be something illegal about this...

I believe Hogie had a chat with them, they have taken EQEmu out of the guide. That is what I had heard anyway

Belive me as someone who fell victim to the scam, I am currently trying to get my cc to deny the charges.
Since I can't actually read the guides (the reason why i am trying to get my money back) i can't tell you if it mentions EQEmu in there. But I do know as part of the e-mail you receive when you register they provide link which basically states:
"if you don't want to wait for us to set up a EQEmu account for you, you can do it yourself by clicking here" and the link which is how I found the site in the first place. Talk about not getting your money's worth. On the plus side, at least I found a useful forum. :o

Realistically, he's providing INFORMATION on the emulators.

It's not unlike a "Windows For Dummies" guide.

However, the other side of the issue is this: It's hard to keep a guide going where you stay on top of every development of an open source project like this one.

It's different for things like PHP or SQL where there are definitive "milestone" releases - EQEmu is updated all the time with no real milestone releases.

So the worst you can probably say 'bout this guy is that he may be misleading people somewhat with old information. If he was selling a CD with EQEmu on it, that'd be different.

I think it's great. Any fool who pays money, when a simple web search would give you all the info you need, deserves what they get. Stupid people lose money, smart people get money. This is an extension of natural selection into the online world. I hope he's making big bucks.

I like how the first poster says there must be something illegal about this. You got scammed casue your an imbecile, nothing illegal about that.

All that guide has in it is a torn up, re-worded version of one of our install guides.

heres the guide you pay 15$ for (see attachment)...

I dont know if there is a "newer" one but i doubt it is much better.

(EDIT: It wouldnt let me add the attachment so here is a link to download it)

No, I wouldnt call him stupid, he just jumped at the chance when he saw it rather than exploring the possibilities, its the reason you should always walk away from a deal to research it before agreeing to it, but over zealous shopping affects all of us at one time or another. I've bought things before and realized if I had waited a little while, I could have done it myself or come up with a better deal, but I hardly think that makes me an imbecile.

And EQ-Chris, if I ever see you insult someone like that on the boards again, Im going to have a very special present for you. We have been lax against the no flame rule as of late, I'd say its about time to reinforce the rule. You can say that someone made a bad decision, or didnt think things through properly, but calling someone 'stupid' and an 'imbecile' is a pretty stupid thing to say based on your very limited knowledge.

I think the fact that he was kind enough to post a message to warn other people about it, and admit his own mistake was both brave, and thoughtful to the rest of the community. Show a little respect to other users in the future before opening your mouth.

They guy is actually kind of smart...making money from people who don't know any better. I feel bad for the people who buy it when all the information is free out there on the internet. A google search of eqemu brings this site up as #1.

But people dont know about emulators. That's the #1 problem. They dont know you can play for free (though, honestly, it isn't the same thing as the main servers).

that is why eqemu needs legit servers ALSO (just like Main servers BUT with twists such as Guildwars for example) but being EQEMU is free for now it gives all of us who want variety or dont want to pay 13$ a month for eq. I myself still play live and eqemu. I hope eqemu never goes pay (which i doubt it) but i wouldnt blame you guys if you did seeing all the money troubles you go thru for this project. I respect you for that.

I still play EQlive as well (although rarely) but I just started on the emulators. Truthfully, after playing for 3 1/2 years on EQlive, EQEMu is such a nice twist. I've started some classes that I haven't played before because I'm tired of all the time it takes to level, get equipment, go on 4+ hour long raids, ect. I haven't experimented with my own server too much yet, but I plan to. The developers have done a great job and so far ForeverHacking has been great.
