I finally succeed in getting past the server select screen (yay), and make a character, but afterwards, the screen goes black, and after a while of loading EverQuest quits and I'm sent to the desktop without any error message.
Now, after the server select screen, it quits with the error "Problem occured in EQGFX_DX8.DLL". I've tried using EQWindows and I get the exact same error.
Sorry if this is a newbie question

Resinstalling DirectX 9.0 didn't work... is it possible to install DirectX 8.1 at this point? If so, where would I get it from?

I would guess your video card drivers are old or goofy... make sure you have the latest video drivers you can lay your hands on.. (or if you're using nvidia, try a different build)
