Basic Questions

I have a couple basic questions regarding setup of the systems and I have searched and browsed for this information but can't seem to find a real straight answer.

1. Would it be possible on the same system to have two installs of EQ, one pointing to EQ Live and the other to EQ Emu and have them work successfully?

2. I have one system to me currently. Do individuals have much success running the SQL server on their system hosting the server and then playing on the same server...you know, playing locally?

3. In the near future, I may get my hands on another system. I would prefer to use this to host a server for local play. Does this system's specs have to be such that it would handle playing EQ, or can it be a less speedy system?

I have read the manual and such but can't really figure these ones out clearly. Anyone give me some advice or at least point me in the right directly?

The answer to questions 1 and 2 is yes, but the answer to question 3 is no. EQemu can be run relatively easily by any computer that supports networking (Windows or Linux-based of course)

1: Yes, that is the best thing you can do is have 2 EQ Folders. Then you can Only Patch EQEMu when you are told to.

2: Yes, You can run the server off the same computer you play EQEMu on. There is alot of PPL that do it and have success with it.

3: You can run EQEMu Server off a Linux Box you dont have to use Windows. Now you can have a top of the line comp and in 90% of the time a MUCH slower Linux Server will Run EQEMu Better so...

I guess then the next thing to tackle would be....dare I say....would you know some term that I could search for that would bring up information on the dual installs or anything? I can't seem to locate much on that.

Additionally, one thing I forgot, how's the performance on the system where you try to run the server and also play on the server at the same time? Does it suffer tremendously or is it pretty transparent?

I'm running MySQL, minilogin, world and zones and the EQ client all on one box. It seems to be fine, but it is just me on there screwing around.

The machine is a Athlon 1800 with 768 meg of ram.

In order to set up dual-boot on your computer, I recommend creating a separate partition for each OS. There is also an option you change in Windows 2000/XP to boot multiple operating systems (go to Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery). There you can view all of your OS's and setup a menu so you can decide when your computer starts. Above all, MAKE SURE THAT YOUR OPERATING SYSTEMS ARE INSTALLED ON DIFFERENT VOLUMES. Otherwise, system files can easily be overwritten on one OS or the other, which is definitely not a good thing :D . If you have any more questions, some of the guys here or on the IRC channels can help you out. I'm only on IRC on occasion, so just post here in the event that you can't get ahold of me another way.

I was referring to two installs of EQ, not a dual boot scenario. I guess what I will do is just make a copy of the EQ directory in another loc and use that one for EQEmu.
