WHEW. Now this was an enormous amount of work...

1. Major new feature: Added a ground editor feature that lets you paint different textures on the ground area. See the documentation for full details.

2. Lots of bug fixes (so many I've lost count).

3. Many GUI usability improvements (so many I've lost count) :)

4. Ability to insert scenes into an existing one (the ground editor requires scenes written with OpenZone 1.7 or later, and this allows you to upgrade to the new format--see the documentation for details). Inserting a scene takes all elements from a scene and imports them into another.

Someone had the great idea to paint the ground like a grid, and that's what the ground editor does. If you generate a ground area using a heightmap with OpenZone 1.7 or later, the ground editor will let you paint textures on the mesh. The program can still open all earlier .SCN versions, and I've documented a relatively easy procedure for upgrading an existing .SCN file to 1.7 format.
