View Full Version : Wacky, but curious question!

Ok, I know this might sound silly, but let me ask anyway. I used to be a big player on EQ PC, but eventually got tired of it and cancelled my subscription. I like most here I guess dropped the account figuring eventually I'd play for free on the player run server emus. Well, after a while I took notice of EQ OA for the PS2. I'll admit my first thoughts were that NO console could have a game like EQ PC and be any good. After reading about EQOA in magazines my curiosity got to me. Hmmmm, what was Norrath like 500 years earlier? I had to see Qeynos and my favorite Blackburrow as well as Halas. The more I played the more I began to get comfortable with the game. By level 15 I realized it was kind of fun. Less hassle than EQ PC as it was more simplistic. A bit more action oriented and the last thing I thought I'd ever like was using a game controller. Well, now I'm soooo used to playing EQ OA I found it hard to get back to the standard EQ commands and mouse use. I can get back into it, but another idea came to me. I wish to run my own server also eventually for me and my friends. Most of my friends and my girlfriend especially like the way EQ looks, but don't have the patience to sit and learn all the necessary commands. It hit me when my girlfriend was playing on my EQ OA account. She had a blast and enjoyed it. She even managed to say "This is the kind of game I could get into" I was shocked. It was the controlls. they were very easy to learn and use being just a joystick controller and little use of a keyboard. Anyhow, what I wanted to ask about EQ PC is this. Is it possible to perhaps buy one of those PS2 like joysticks for the PC and then configure any of them either through their hardware or the EQ client to setup the analog stick to function as a directional controller and the buttons as target, attack, sit, scroll through skill/spell slots, etc.... My thought is that if this can be done and then basically take EQ PC and make it a little easier for non die hard PC gamers, it may attract more people to play the game on a emulated server. I know EQ PC is much more indepth and complex than the simple PS2 EQ OA, but my thoughts are this. What if the server op, sets up his server to be more action oriented and make some of the necessary key commands of EQ PC less important or less frequently used on their server. If that can't be possible then at least the most common commands could be attached to a joystick directional pad or fire button. I know this is probably a silly question, but I just thought I'd ask. If it can't be done then ohh well, no big deal. I'll still be playing. :)

Sincerely,

John

EverQuest and all it's expansions are a MUCH different format then EverQuest On-Line Adventures. ---

When SOE built EQ OA they didn't just take EverQuest PC and add/delete crap off it, they completely restarted it. So a talented Game Developer w/ materials could do that, but it would cost money. Screwing around with EQ PC to make it similiar to EQ OA would take the Dev's a very long time, heh. And they're already working their asses off, so go Dev's !

And I WASN'T asking them to do it! I was just curious to know if one could use a controller with EQ PC. I KNOW EQ OA is a totally different program as I have used both, I wsn't assuming that they were related in any way other than being part of the EQ world. As for the dev team, they certainly do have their hands full. Anotehr reason why I wouldn't ask or expect them to make those changes, was curious if a sysop could do it via a config file maybe.

Actually....i have learned through many gamer professors i have........;).....that the xbox controller is nothing more than a usb device witha diffrent terminator. there are 3 wires......2 of wich are used ina usb cabl.....the other meant exsclusively for dual shoc...if you made your own termination at the end..cough cough...a usb one let's say....it is very possible ne OS would pick it up as a mouse....hope that helped :)
