Im NOT making ANY major assumptions that eqemu has spyware, but in a post on the main site, it says that you will be banned for life if you talk about certain things over Email, Private messages, Yahoo! Instant Messager, or or chat programs. Does that mean that you are monitering our email adresses and such? Or does that mean i can talk about it with my friend in Michagan, just not Eqemu staff??
In one post, I read that some 12 year old kid threatened all of you, and somehow you were able to find out his personal information, like where he lived and the such.
Again, im not a spyware or hacking program expert, so im not trying to piss people off, or make other people think that you are bad people.
Im just curious :)
Thanks

No funk it does not. You can be assured this is not installing anything on your computer. I know that you dont mean to imply or anything but the simple answer is no. The EMU is really just a server set up so that your client can connect to it and play EQ. We are fun loving people i swear we do not cheat our fellow countrypersons.

Every time you connect to the internet you are assigned an IP Address. this address is unique to you and is your identity. every time you connect to someone elce (may it be a chat server, web server, etc) your computer transmits your ip address all over the place.
Its not that hard to find out who someone is by their IP address.
and no, there is absolutely no "spyware" in EQEmu.

I found his personal information, and it was only through very simple, commonly available tools to anyone on the internet, and it was only because he made a veiled threat pertaining to our family and friends, and I don't take well to that. We don't read your email, hack your computers, or any such nonsense, honestly we have better things to be working on.
We don't regulate what you do outside of eqemu or these boards, but when you are here, you have to play within our rules to a certain degree, thats just the way it is. We've made it ABUNDANTLY clear why we take the stance we do regarding certain topics. I wouldnt suggest communicating threats and/or info regarding illegal activities using the PM system however. We don't look at it, but because it's stored in the same location as the rest of the forums, its not private or secure. EQEMU makes no claims or promises regarding security of messages sent within the internal EQEMU forum structures, so you do things like that at your own risk. If a user claims you harass him via PM's, we can trace that for proof positive and use it to ban you with.
So, in a nutshell, no, we dont.
And that isolated incident was only because I took the thread as a personal threat, and I refuse to stand for that. IN the end, it was all settled nicely and cleanly, but the way that I did it was perfectly legimate for someone with the experience I do and resources that I have available.
It should ultimately be a stern reminder that you are all responsible for your own actions, and your misdeeds can come back to you in RL, even if you think you're safe behind an electronic wall on the internet, so play nice and stay out of trouble folks! Not just on eqemu, but everywhere on the net....
This has been a public service announcement from 'TRUMPCARD' (tm)
