1017 error, linksys router issues.

From another person. I run WinXP home and a Linksys router.. How do I fix this? :(

OK. Oops. I don't have problems, but when other people try to connect to my server, like 100% get 1017 errors.

You're not going to be able to host behind NAT (which most cable/dsl "routers" use) unless you can set up what is called 'static' NAT. That sounds like the port forwarding that you mentioned. Basically that makes your router seem to be the server by 'echoing' all the packets on a given port to another IP. Then all packets in answer are 'echo'ed right back out to the client.

My advice: see if your ISP can give you another IP. Many will do it for only $5/month - and then you'll have one for your server and can forget the headache...

If that's not an option, maybe you could gear up an old pentium with Mandrake and ipmasqerade - something free and more configurable.

Firstly make sure the router firmware is current, this fixed it for me
On my router you can set up a DMZ host, i did this for my server and it worked fine.
It also worked to just do port forwarding

Ok, heres a question for...

I can port forward the UDP packets to my internal box via iptables PREROUTING rules, but what does the configuration of the zone servers and world server need to look like?

Where do I need to use the outside ip address, and where do I need to use the internal lan dns?

Say my outside ip is 24.100.100.5, and internal is 192.168.0.2

zone . 24.100.100.5 9000 192.168.0.2 ?

Ive tried a few different configurations, and though I am able to redirect through the firewall, I cant seem to make it work this way, still get to 1017 error..
