cannot log in

I have not patched to live and my eqhost.txt is set for port 5998 but when i try to log in it says a connection can not be made to the server. am i missing something small?

Speaking of Krusher's fix. I downloaded it and since then i get an eqgame.exe error after clicking play now instead of 1017. Any way to fix that one?
