Default Creating a lan server-Confusion!

Some background before I go on. This is my first time messing with MySQL and perl, so I'm pretty much all over the place.

I've been following the directions pretty dead on from http://www.eqemulator.net/wiki/wikka...indowsServer70 and I'm at the part where I'm supposed to edit the eqemu_config.xml . I installed both cavemans and the PEQ database. I open the .xml file and the following pops up.

Quote:
The XML page cannot be displayed

Cannot view XML input using style sheet. Please correct the error and then click the Refresh button, or try again later.

Expecting whitespace or '?'. Error processing resource 'file:///C:/EQEmu/eqemu_config.xml'. Line 1, Position 20

<?xml version="1.0">
Eh?

What I'm trying to do is set up a lan server for a group of friends. I want to act as a sort of lame D&D GM and set up quests and the like for this group of friends to complete. You know, clearing something like CB and getting XP, or killing a certain badguy and handing out a piece of loot for everyone.

Eventually, I want to make some specialized items for my buds, but that's a long ways down the line.

I'm absolutely clueless as to what I'm supposed to do. I followed the directions directly and they didn't direct me in the right direction. Heeelp.

That guide is fairly old, try to follow the newest one to get your server going, then switch over and follow the MiniLogin guide to set up a LAN type server. If you can hold off until tommorw night, I will have my guide up in PDF with screenies, but the best part is it will have the minilogin information to set up with no hassles.

Thanks a ton man. I'm going to just start from scratch. I'm re-downloading all the required files and I'll have at it tomorrow night.

Yeah, techguy's 992 build guide is quite nice. I've set up emu servers several times over now, but his guide is still very easy to follow.

Allright, I'm stuck (again) at a different part. When trying to get the PEQ DB stuff using WinCVS I get an odd error.

Quote:
TCL or Python are not available, shell is disabled

cvs -d : pserver:anonymous@eqemuquests.cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/eqemuquests checkout -P -- peq_dp (in directory C:\peqdb)

cvs checkout: Empty password used - try 'cvs login' with a real password

cvs checkout: cwd=C:\peqdb ,current=C:\peqdb

cvs server: cannot find module `peq_dp' - ignored

cvs [checkout aborted]: cannot expand modules

***** CVS exited normally with code 1 *****
Note there is no space between the : and the p in the second line. I added the space so it wouldn't make this face :p.

I've tried several things, including starting from scratch and I get the same thing each time.

peq_db not peq_dp

I think that's your problem.

Edit: Curse you, jimbabwe. :p

Well, I'm in another pickle. I've got my server up and running just fine. I can log on, do all the GM stuff I want, etc. I also have the EQOffline bots set up and working (took me a while to figure out the tables and what not).

So I made a character, made a quick companion, and started moving around. The first thing I noticed was that my latency was pretty big considering I'm right here at home (same computer). My companion was pretty laggy.

I ran around, looking at the monsters when I realized "Hey, these things aren't attacking me... and they aren't moving... and when I attack them they just stand there... hmm." I adjusted the XP rate earlier to make it a bit faster (this worked, as well as all the loot adjustments I made) and leveled up.

And here I am. I searched the wiki for awhile and had no idea what to search for. I also used the search function pretty extensively (about 10 minutes) and couldn't find anything on why my local latency is so huge as well as why no NPC's attack me. Note I can hail NPC's and some respond. I can also buy and sell from merchants just fine.

I'll be so peachy happy once I get this all worked out.

I hope for you and your friends' sake that the dedicated server PC is semi decent. I've ran it on a 750 mhz PC with 1GB of pc133 ram and it ran fine with 4 people - yeah POS, lol. Since then, I've upgraded the motherboard and processor and everything is a heck of a lot better. Everyone zones in a few seconds now.

The emulator doesn't eat a huge load of processes, and is one of the most well written emus, imo. If not, the best ever in my experience with emulators. I can actually have EQ and another server running at the same time - maybe even two. With that being said, I think your PC or server isn't set up properly.

That lag can be caused by a whole number of things. You need to give us the specs of the server to get an idea of what it can handle. It could be that since you're all new to this that something got stuffed during the installation or whatever.

And the other issue is because you're possibly in GM mode. When you're in GM mode (green name), nothing will react to you - meaning no aggro. Turn it off (the wikki should have the commands) and everything should be fine.

Remember, the bots are still beta. You should really try to play without them first before adding all sorts of things to your server. You're just going to end up confusing yourself (if this is your first time especially) and possibly breaking something in the process.

Default NPC's not attacking

Have you downloaded the map files? The NPC will not attack unless the map files are present.
If you have, make sure there is not a maps directory in maps.
Some times unziping the map files causes an extra directory for example
c:\eqemu\maps\maps
