Default Serializing Items Table?

I keep seeing vague refrences to "serializing" items in the db but for the life of me I can't seem to find any information on what this means and how to go about it. I've searched the forums and turned up nothing descriptive enough for a newb to use.

I've made some minor changes to a couple of items in my db but aparantly I need to "serialize" those two rows in order for the changes to take effect in-game. Would anyone kindly point me in the right direction?

(I do see the field in the db for serialization but have no idea what I'm supposed to edit there. I'm sure it's probably something simple...)

Right on, thanks FNW. I have perl installed but have no idea yet how to use it. So far I'm trying to focus more on learning about MySQL and PHP, but will poke around a bit and see what I can find on Perl. Now I know where to start
