am i broke?

i just reinstalled all my eq cd's and patched on 9-7-05. i was able to get to server select and create a toon. I selected the PEQ server since it was the preferred server. my problem is after i select my toon and enter world it just hangs there at the char select screen for a bit then boots me back to the server select screen. my eqhost file says this ---> Host=eqemulator.net:5998 and i ive done everything to exact duplication. is the server down or am i broke and have to wait for an update? ive read through some other recent posts but really didnt find an answer. either the posts were never answered or they are out dated. can someone shed some light.
