Heres a bit o history to explain.
Sony makes the client software. Therefore they can (and do) change the crypto, opcodes and a myriad of other things every time they issue a patch. EQEmu is designed to communicate with and understand an EQ client that 'speaks' the proper crypto, opcodes, etc.
This said, each and every single time Sony propped a new patch, EQEmu was temporarily broken till the Devs could decode the new client and make EQEmu 'speak' to it again. Additionally, people could continue to use their now 'older EQ clients' to play on EQEmu servers, but if they patched to the most recent client, they were SOL. Likewise, anyone starting new could only patch to live and not live - 1 because that has been deemed 'warez' and is illegal.
The Devs busted their collective arses for years keeping EQEmu up to date with Live. Then someone came up with a hell of an idea:
Make a distro of EQEmu that is compatable with a non-patched fresh install of a EQ CD set.
This eliminated the continual 'chasing' of Live and having a broken EQEmu from time to time.
As it currently stands, you need Live - 1 or 2 patches in order to play on < 7.0 servers OR dig up the 20 clams and pay for titanium. If you buy a new one and you dont like EQEmu, then you still have 30 free days to play on EQ Live.
Words for the wise:
- dont ask about titanium .iso's
- dont ask about how to get a backpatch
- dont ask stupid questions unless you enjoy getting flamed and recieving stupid answers.
- use the search feature of the forums, being 10% educated about a subject before asking a question makes the WORLD of difference when you ask for help... trust me.
- grit your teeth and muck through the wiki, no its not the best organized and some of it is out of date, but its a friggin gold mine of info.
