I know this workaround is trivial (i'm a n00b to EQEmu), and i suspect many others do this, but i haven't seen 1 single post about this. So i thought i might aswell share it.
I had trouble using the "eqgame patchme" and EQW.exe "play on test server" to login to my newly created uber server (I created my own loginserver too). Got some silly errors about some stupid reverb error in some sound module (I use a Terratec soundcard). Now, i dont really care for errors and wanted to kill someone quickly. As i couldnt find anyone to kill i decided to use 30 seconds to find a solution to this silly little problem.
Now, when you start eqgame.exe, it automatically wants to find the EQ site on the internet. It either does this or it quits. This means that this work-around will NOT work on a network without an internet connection.
Firstly, backup your custom EQHOSTS.TXT, then follow these guidelines:
1. Let EQGAME.EXE find the EQ site on the net.
2. Let it download the file eqhosts.txt (since it detects this file isnt upto date with the online servers) [This file was changed by you to reflect on your own login server IP address].
3. Turn Off AUTOPLAY.
4. Make sure all downloading is finished. Now, copy your custom EQHOSTS.TXT back to your EQ directory, overwriting the newly downloaded EQHOSTS.TXT.
5. Press PLAY
