"Illegal Action", when trying to load charater sel

I've looked all around for some remedy for this before posting, but unfortunatly havent found one. Also my computer skills go about as far as...well, not very far at all . Heres the problem. I log into the Sever Select screen just fine, but when i select the server, the screen goes black for a moment (as if loading) but then tells me its performed an illegal function, which looks alot like this ;

I tried tinkering around with the .dll things in the EQ folder, but, that of course offered no help at all. So if anyone can do anything with this, it would probably save my computer a toss out the window .

Also, here are my specs (...which may warrant a toss out the window on their own :P)

Windows '98
Celeron 600mhz
Savage s4 video card
256mb ram
DirectX 8.1 <----relevant i think?

heh, fixed it....figures first thing you do after posting a help topic is fix the problem your asking about .

But I guess my computer didnt want to stop there, not goin down without a fight or somethin. Now, it goes to load screen (Everquest logo with "Loading Armor...ect.ect and random nonsense), but when its done "Loading World" and is about to go to Character Select screen, it crashes back to desktop :(.

I haven't tried much to fix it, and hopefully i do as soon as i post this , but if anyone knows whats up, please post back, any help of course greatly appreciated .
