Default A new member with a few general questions

Hello everyone. I'm just another X-EQ fan with a passing interest in hosting my own EQemu server. I just had a small question as my eq database imports the updated MW055_alpha_02.sql overtop the original. (The PC speakers going off from the 1062 errors is driving me insane!) My first question is, does anyone know what kind of bandwidth each client will need upload/download. For example streaming 20k is near CD-Quality when you're talking audio. Citrix emulation requires a min. of 18k per client. This information will allow me to decide how benificial it would be for me to make a public dedicated server on my old P4 2.1Ghz. If I were to run a dedicated server it would be from a cable modem with about a 60kb push and a 400kb pull. If each client requires 20Kb it would be pretty pointless for me to make a public server until I find alternative bandwidth.

Thanks.

The general rule is each client will need 5 KBps bandwidth for Emu. However, I have found that clients only use that much while zoning/loading. When in a client is in a zone and is just playing, the requirments drop to 500 bytes to around 1KB. Also, the newest version of Emu features packet combining which drops loading and general playing requirments even more (haven't had time to get actual figures yet) If you have 60KB upload speeds, then you have enough to get a small server running. You can probably squeeze around 15 users on your server possibly more with the packet combining.

I just noticed that you said 60kb... If your upload speed is only 60 kilobits than you won't have enough bandwidth to run a server. If it is indeed 60 kilobytes than as I previously said you'll be fine.

60 kilobytes, that's what I mean. I was just typing quickly.

You can have mysql ignore the beeping errors with the -b command. Will speed up your compile by about 12 hours too )

I've actually decided to put all this on my Dedicated P4 2.2 ghz machine with w2k. I was thinking about using the Mysql front end to import the databases, is there any disadvantages in doing so?

There aren't any disadvantages that I know of, although dealing with databases through the command line is far easier and faster imho.

well, it's my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong.) That for an initial setup I need to import the TCMyWorld's Alpha 1 database, TCMyWorld's Alpha 2 database, lootdrop update by govtcheeze v0.2 , and dumpeditems.sql into the EQ database. Edit the db.ini, LoginServer.ini, and boot5zones.bat.

After that it's just a matter of Extract EQEmu 5.6 & the 5.6 configuration in a EQEmu directory, and moving over the spells_en.txt and spells_us.txt.

Not sure if I'll need any of the masks, or texture packs.

... Do I actually need EQ installed on the server, or is it enough to just have this?

No, if you are running your server on a dedicated PC, you just need to copy over the spells_us.txt, you don't need to install EQ (aka EQ client) on that PC.
